Thoughts on the Onside kick

Oct 10, 2016, 12:26 PM

I'm not questioning the decision to try an onside kick - I'm fine with us using the opportunity as a situational practice. My question has more to do with execution of the play.

A few years ago (4 I believe) we ran a very similar onside kick vs. SCar. The kicker popped the ball up, and our outside guy ran down and grabbed it (more than 10 yards from the LOS) before a waiting Gamecock could receive the ball. The recovery for Clemson got reversed because the SCar player had called for a fair catch. If we'd kicked the ball into the ground first, and had it pop up, and then made the catch, the recovery would have stood (can't fair catch a ball that's hit the ground).

If we're going to practice onside kicks, wouldn't it make more sense to have the kicker drive the ball into the ground and try to get it to pop up? Or were we trying to do a 'Bama-esque onside kick? Was BC lined up where there was no one in position to make a fair catch?

What we deserved when they went and scored a touchdown.

That soft asz mentality right there will lose games. Step on their throat Dabo and don't let up!

idiots galore. what better time to work on a play than when up 35. we may need to use it against a good team in the future. kinda funny how we got goobers that complain when dabo takes the foot off the throat to soon. bush is most definitely a term that can be used against dabo. but on this site, who knows what you might read.

I can absolutely see the criticism from outside being that

it was poor sportsmanship, blah blah blah. This was the only opportunity to practice that type of kick in a scenario that would in any way replicate a real-life opportunity. You can only "practice" those types of plays against your own squad so often.

I think this would have gone over better with critics had it been in the second quarter, but I don't mind the attempt. I think Dabo is doing everything he can to get this team ready to play deep into the winter and he wants that title badly.

I like it as a Clemson fan but if I were a BC fan I would hate it.

Liability Cola by CU_Tigers_time is now trending on Tnet.

We were trying the Bama "pop up" kick to hit that gap.

Oct 10, 2016, 2:07 PM

We probably will never see it again unless we try it to build a lead in the ACCCG or something... I don't mind using a blow-out game as practice. It is the perfect scenario to open the play book wide and see what you can accomplish.
