This situation with the Florida quarterback and the 13

Jan 18, 2023, 1:53 PM

million NIL deal debacle: If we've reached a point where some incoming football recruits are going to be making this kind of money, or anywhere close to it, then please somebody in charge (NCAA?) just humor me and announce that these particular athletes are not required to be academically enrolled. Enough with the charade. They are just there to play football at this institution, that other people attend to pursue degrees of higher education, and fulfill their duties pertaining to their 13 million NIL agreement. There should be absolutely no requirement of any kind for academic enrollment/progress. For the love of God, don't insult us anymore.

Most football players at Clemson are on the honor roll. Just Amazing.

THere are many soft majors .....

Jan 18, 2023, 4:10 PM

... not saying all scholly holders take the easy majors, but there is a lot of demand on their time. Many take legit courses. I averaged 20 hours/semester in Electrical and Computer ENgineering major, it would be impossible to do more than 9-12 hours/semester, if that much, in a hard major and do football or basketball or any scholarship sports.

I cringe a bit when I read "he graduated from Clemson in just 3 years while leading the sports team to a ...." Major and courses taken are not known, but hopefully are valuable and add to richness of their time in Tigertown.

Yes and no to your course load point

Many of our best athletes graduate from HS in December and start college in January of the year they are eligible to play. When you see an athlete touted for finishing in three years, it is possible that it was done legitimately with slightly less than a full semester course load at any time.

The kids are in school 12 months a year while they are eligible plus the spring semester when they used to stay in high school. Add to that the fact that most good students step onto campus with several hours of college credit in the bank from various high school honors programs.

That's 7 semesters plus up to 4 summer terms that they can use to earn a degree in three years. The math works and it's still a great accomplishment.

A lot of these kids show-up...

having already earned a bunch of college credits in high school. Both my kids took a litany of AP coursed in high school, so when they showed-up at Clemson for their Freshman year, they were already categorized academically as a sophomore before ever actually setting foot in a Clemson class.

Back in my day...

coach Ibrahim would review transcripts and then decide if a player could take more than 12 credit hours of coursework during the season. Of course, 12 hours was the minimum number required to be considered a fulltime student which was an eligibility requirement. I generally took 15 hours per semester and then I'd pick up another 6 to 9 during the summer.
