I got one more, I'm thinking about...

What is the mechanism by which either of these programs falls off this level? It's honestly hard to see.
The most obvious one is Saban's retirement. Swinney certainly seems to be farther away from that point than Saban.
So, besides retirement, what could slow the momentum? A big QB recruit bust? Could Dabo's charisma and message get stale, or could his energy fade?
No program stays elite forever. Closest thing was Bowden's FSU program, maybe? But he didn't get multiple national championships is a small time frame like these two programs have.

coaching turnover. Not sure we could tolerate it like Bama

Has. Just my opinion.
Or if Dabo lets the light shining on him get brighter than the light inside him. Doubt he will, but there’s been a couple of comments over the last couple years that made me look like I smelled ####.

There's been a lot of consistency on the Clemson coaching staff...that's huge.

I think it would be a QB bust or the likes of FSU,

LSU, Auburn, or Georgia really getting their act together. I think Georgia is close, but probably have some demons in their head after the last two years.

going on there. They have the talent but they will wind up like FSU without knowing what to do with it.

I kinda thought Oklahoma, Georgia, or even Ohio State would finish above ND.

My ratings like their schedule better than

most people do, subjectively.
I think the main reason is that they do not play the number of really bad teams that most other teams do (especially that they never play an FCS school). So their schedule always shows pretty difficult, even if they don't play a bunch of elite teams.

Losing Saban for Bama and BV for Clemson.
Jan 8, 2019, 2:37 PM

Offensive coordinators seem much easier to replace than defensive coordinators in this era of football. Saban and BV are the two best defensive coordinators in the business and it's not coincidence that the teams they coach are the two best teams. When they leave both programs will be unable to replace that level of coaching and will take a pretty big step back. They'll still be really good teams, but won't be to the same elite level of playing for/winning multiple national titles like they are now.
