I downloaded a cracked copy of Toyota Techstream and put it on an old laptop

It even came in its own virtual box VM.
I like being able to do everything a dealer can do with the 4runner's computers. I could change tire diameter to keep the speedometer correct, turn off TPMS (did that one), match new key fobs to the car..it's pretty useful.

But any of them will most likely do what you want, which is get rid of lights by erasing codes.

well, getting rid of codes, but would also fix if cheap. Would hate it if the lights popped back on while CarMax was checking it out.

I have a cheap one, and I think those are mostly interchangeable.

I also have a friend who has an expensive one that will show everything a dealer or mechanic can possibly pull up, too, for the 50% of the time my cheap one won't give me the detail I need (like which of the 4 ABS sensors is actually bad), or just won't pull a code at all.

They'll read the code for you and tell you what it means, then let you clear it.
My guess is a 02 sensor.
Or gas cap. Gotta replace with a Toyota gas cap only. From a dealer. None of the others work.

Also just putting a new cap on there won't delete the codes.

You can disconnect the battery for few minutes. But afterwards, if you have a sunroof, you'll have to reindex that, your roll down rear window and your drivers and passenger door windows. I mean its not hard to do , just has to be done. Else the windows will roll down and not come all the way back up or something.

Why would you turn off TPMS?

Wife actually just called me frantically about the TPMS light coming on, and I'm like "yeah, I was going to put air in the tire before you left but didn't catch you."
I just bumped 8 tires back up to 36 lbs. even.

cable. Lights stayed off for a couple days, came back. Returning cap, ordered another OE one.
Would like to know which O2 sensor if that's it.

Code reader should tell you which sensor and which bank.

They start at "1" going towards the rear of the car. I think my V8 had four o2 sensors...or it might be 6. I can't remember..but I over the last 15 years I have replaced a lot of them.
That's another thing you need to pony up and buy the Denso version of. Other brands will error out sometimes immediately, sometimes in 5K miles. I learned that the hard way.
And not sure how much stock I'd put in the Carmax or Carvana price you'll get. My neighbor sold his wife's beat 140K 2011 4runner a few weeks ago to the first guy that came by the first day he had it for sale. I don't know what he got for it, but he said it was "a lot" more than what Carmax was going to give him for it. They bring more than book value on a private sale--especially if its in decent condition.
He bought a sweeet '23 GX460 with < 20K miles..but paid dearly for it.

may sell it myself. Similar story when I sold my '99 4Runner Limited years ago. Parked it out in a high traffic area near my house, went into Roanoke with wife to eat supper. Guy called after we ordered, hot to buy it, said he'd wait for me, had cash in his safe at home.

Might as well look into selling it yourself.

Put it on Facebook Marketplace for $1000-$1500 more than what you want for it, and see who bites.
If it gets to be too much of a PIA, take it to Carmax/Carvana.
Another option is a local dealer--I sold my new truck this last weekend to a dealer, and got almost what I paid for it in April. They were $6k higher on an offer than Carmax was.

then did something different. Thanks for your participation. I got the twin-pack of small cans of MAF cleaner and throttle body cleaner at WallyWorld for $10 and cleaned both on the 4Runner. Not sure if it runs any better, but check engine/Trac off/4LO lights are still on (didn't remove battery cable) I figure the labor savings paid for this scan tool:

I’m now prepping to sell. 10 yrs ago. I thought price was high, he thought it was fair. It’s been a great vehicle. Had 2 great 4Runners, getting another one this month, whenever it gets off the boat.
