This is interesting. Russia has defaulted on its debt

Jun 27, 2022, 11:12 AM

For the first time since 1918. What is more interesting is this is the first time EVER that a country has "defaulted" when it has the money to pay the debt, but can't because those it owes won't take the payment. So is it really a default? I dunno, but it's not a good thing. This sets a very bad global economic precedent. Traditionally, money is thicker than blood, wars, or politics, etc. It has fostered more peace and stability than wars, and has prevented many wars. Remove that mutual/global understanding, and the wheels can really fly off.

I dunno. They're re-opening some of their Mickey D's as that "burger and two fries or whatever it is" logo-they-stole-from-Marriott...I mean, considering Mickey D's is the one that came into that country, invested their capital, built the stores and supply lines, and Russia is just putting new signs up and literally marking out the old BBQ pack labels...is that kosher either?

Especially considering that Russia broke the ages old "McDonald's Rule" - up until now, no country that had a Mickey D's had ever declared war on another - and tried to rewind the clock to 1939 when big-headed dictators with imperial ambitions decide to change the map under a swarm of tanks and bombs and have no compunctions about deliberating targeting civilians (and have probably killed 100,000+ of them)...I dunno, if you gotta cheat a little to crash their economy, Oh Well. Though I agree there may be unintended long-term consequences.

But especially because Russia is indeed just slapping their own labels on companies built with Western investment...who in their right mind would ever invest in Russia again anyway?

It's a lesson that will reverberate outside of Russia as

well. Corporations will think twice about investing capital in countries with governments even remotely predisposed to nationalization.
