Pretty sure the WR is running toward the goal post, not the sideline.

the goal posts are inside the hashes. The route is going to the outside of the right hash. It's a flag route.

lol, this post has caused much more discussion than originally thought it would, but I am thinking that the WR on this diagram is not between the hashes, but between the left sideline and the left hash mark. This is where the yard line numbers are generally painted, and would be the more likely location for a WR to line up anyway. If this is the case, the WR is then running towards the middle of the field (or the goal post), not the sideline. It is poorly drawn diagram though, and probably should not show "hash marks" along the sideline.

As I told my WRs when I coached in HS. One kid was having a hard time learning the route tree and and the lingo. He couldn't grasp the the concept of a "post route." I took him aside, pointing him toward the endzone. I asked him "What is that thing sticking out of the ground down there?" He immediately said, "A goal post." He looked at me with a confused look. So, I pointed to the goal post and said, "Why do you think we call it a post route?" Finally the light bulb clicked on an he said, "Oh! That makes sense."
Note: He was a sophomore who had never played football before.
