This Conference Alignment thing is simple (warning, this not

a simple idea I am trying to express)
I personally believe that Notre Dame is the Kingmaker at this point.
The ACC is using GOR to hold their member schools in check, but in reality it's the bad TV deal that is scaring the ACC schools because they know that the ESPN/SEC conference and the FOX/Big16 conference have the war chests.
Notre Dame enjoys their exclusive NBC spot, but that money is going to fail in comparison over the long run to these super conferences. If ND joins SEC or BiG16, their NBC power is gone.
BUT...if the ACC were to 'dissolve' which would then break up the ESPN agreement, and then re-join in a new Conference with current ACC teams, Memphis, Notre Dame, West Virginia, etc...you could then have NBC and potentially CBS as your money backers.
At that point, you could have (3) super-conferences and whatever the Pac12 and Big12 can cobble together...which then conference champs go to the CFP.
Or we could ask the Saudi Public Fund...

Memphis and WVA wont move the needle in terms of revenue so their inclusion would serve to lower the per team payout

WVa would be the 5th best team in the ACC today, and historically really, and they make for great TV and stronger ratings. They would definitely enhance league value.

Even WITH ND, I just dont see it

Is adding ND going to essentially double the current per school take? Because none of those other mediocre programs are going to add anything. And thats the whole issue here. The ACC is in a no-win position at this point. You cant add teams like memphis, WV, Cincy, etc and suddenly you go from 45-50 mil to a 90-100 mil per school payout. Not even with Notre Dame would you see those numbers.

I think Cincy is off the table, they are headed to backfill the Big 12 in 2023.
Memphis, to me, makes some sense because of their basketball pedigree. The ACC also has to preserve that if they want to survive.

You bring up an interesting point...why are CBS and NBC not real players in college football?

Why would the ACC dissolve to add teams? All the mediocre programs in the ACC know if it dissolved for a second their saving grace, Clemson, would be history along with their hopes of ever being relevant again.

Well I'm not a great lawyer, but the dissolution would be the way to get out of the hack 2036 ESPN television agreement, which I believe to be the big issue. More of a 're-brand' was what I was thinking under NBC/CBS rights.

Even simpler

The ACC stays the same for the next 14 years. No Notre Dame. No Cincinnati. No West Virginia. And Clemson, Miami, Florida State and UNC stay in the ACC. Why? Grant of Rights is to airtight. No one is leaving. And no one is joining under those crappy conditions. So in 14 years, the ACC will be Boston College, Clemson, Duke, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Louisville, Miami, North Carolina, North Carolina St, Pitt, Syracuse, Virginia, Virginia Tech, and Wake Forest. That's it. I don't like it, but I don't like being broke either.

All it takes is one IPTAY member to come payoff that GOR though...
While I don't like it, I'm afraid you might be right unless there is some major legal battle willing to be waged. I just wish the ACC had not signed that stupid deal.
