“The Chinese government almost blew it. Then they were vicious, they were horrible, but they put it down with strength. That shows you the power of strength. Our country is right now perceived as weak.”

The 1989 Tienanmen Square protest was a very powerful movement that swept up many youth in Beijing but the government crushed it without mercy and nothing like it has happened since in China

Big, authoritarian government with too much firepower and little respect for its citizens.
Can't happen here, right?

and they showed Chinese students who were studying abroad in America the Tank Man photo and they had no idea what it was. They were really confused because a couple of them recognized the street and tanks. They made the conclusion that it was artwork of some kind

Slaughtered hundreds if not thousands of their citizens during that protest.
I'm wondering if some folks aren't wanting the same thing to happen here.

he could have been executed. A Chinese official said several years later "Do not think he was killed" but that's hardly convincing.

One thing that the BLM folks seem to understand, for better or for worse, is that being civil and reformist will never get you as much attention as being violently disruptive and radical. That might just be because there aren't that many people who want to commit much to their cause.

The Chinese government won. They slaughtered the protesters and wiped the incident from their history.

People love the symbolism of protest
Sep 22, 2016, 3:39 PM

Although the situations aren't comparable at all, it's why social media users are so proud of themselves for sharing viral crap about whatever they think the latest micro-injustice is, and why protesters often seem more interested in theatrical displays than in truly understanding and addressing the problems they face. But protest, but itself, doesn't accomplish anything. It's like the charities that are all about "awareness." It's just marketing if there isn't any political action.

Woman was in no danger at all, including from the issue she was protesting. Also... she's kinda hot.

to the Chinese revolution. If the Chinese protesters had been disruptive it may have prompted an even more harsh reply from the Chinese government. The lack of effectiveness is in relation to what the protesters in China were dealing with more than the style of protest.

That was extraordinarily courageous. The still don't know who he was, but clearly one of the most powerful protests in modern history.
Taking bags of groceries to a tank fight....now that's courage.
