Never Understood the Excitement

I've never really followed recruiting that much, if at all. I don't really get the excitement. There have been plenty of guys that didn't pan out or guys that nobody recruited that turned into stars. What's the difference, the real difference between a 4-star and a 5-star?
I remember way back when that THE kid to get was Ronald Curry. UVA missing out on that kid even cost the basketball coach his job. Wanted to be a 2-sport athlete and turned out to be mediocre at both. His crosstown rival, Michael Vick was hardly mentioned and turned out to be a good NFL QB. Vick's off-field actions cost him. but my point is made.
The truth is, you don't know what you got until they suit up, run down the hill and match-up against all the other "stars". Running, catching or throwing for a zillion yards against high schoolers that'll never see the field again in their entire lives means nothing to me.
It's a crap shoot on a good day. And now the "stars' hold the rake.

Who recruited Hunter Renfrow? How many stars did he have coming out of high school? What matrix did they feed into the computer and determine that when you needed a catch, he was the go to guy?
I suppose I do understand the interest. Everyone needs a hobby. I just get a little amused by the excitement that this is "the guy" that's gonna take us to the promised land. Or the bemoaning of the guys we missed. Granted, there are those guys, Lawrence being the first that comes to mind. But even then, you don't really know until they do it for real. Been around a long time, heard a lot of "oh, this kid is the real deal" only to hear the whomp-whomp when they don't pan out.
With the current climate of college football, "THE guy" that was gonna take us to the promised land quickly becomes "THAT guy" that left for another program.

Hunter Renfrow surprised people. He is an anomaly. Ironically Bama and Georgia have dominated recruiting for the last 5 years. They have done well. On the same note, look atvall of schools that don't get top 20 classes. Yeah they almost always suck.

Hunter Renfrow had ties to Clemson and Dabo through his dad who was a coach at Socastee High School and also another area Head coach, Chuck Jordan at Conway. I tel you this Hunter played QB in Highschool and He was head and shoulders above the other teams He played against and that would be 5A schools. He ran circles around his opponents so the rest of college football may have been surprised but Dabo was not. I saw him play and I was not surprised.

Hoping CJ Spiller would take a leap of faith. That 5 star actually was more like a 9 star. Only issue I had was we would score so fast defense got tired a lot.

I will use a couple of time worn analogies.

"Garbage in = Garbage out." This is from the computer world, meaning, you have to have a good basic program written, or your program is going to crash and burn when you try and process it. Same with football players. There has to be a good foundation in place, which normally is where the higher star rankings come in.
"You can't put lipstick on a pig." Well, you can, but you still just get one funny looking ugly pig. That saying basically means the same thing as the computer analogy. There has to be some basic beauty there, for it to be enhanced. In a football player, that beauty is talent, God given speed or size, or a great pair of hands. It means, coaches can only do so much in development of players, there has to be something there to BE developed to start with.

This used to be the basic school of thought with star ratings:
5* Physically ready to start and make impact as True Freshman, future draft pick
4* Ready to contribute as True Freshman, could hit full potential as Soph
3* Valuable prospect, 1 - 2 years in college program before major contributor
2* Developmental prospect, has one of either Size/Speed/skill, needs to add others

It is true that a third of the guys in any class will never contribute in a meaningful way. A third will have a backup role and a third will be starters. Fans celebrate draft day or NSD knowing much of the excitement is irrational exuberance which is part of the fun of being a fan. Things are never as good or as bad as the general mood of the fan base.

Your point is not made… the one example you give would be the exception to the rule and not the rule. ( I really do not remember what Mike Vick was rated and I have never heard of the other guy) But I tell you this if Dabo and His coaches don’t get the highly rated recruits they won’t be coaching long. Yes there are Diamonds in the ruff but some recruiter saw something that others missed. It is not a crap shoot! You take all the two starts on your team, whoever that is and Give Clemson all 5 stars!

Well, I think that not having heard of the other guy helps make my point.
I'm not looking to rain on anyone's parade here. And certainly not trying to bait anyone into some recruiting sparring match. Well, maybe just a little.
And what happens when Dabo and his coaches sign a team full of "5-stars" and they still go 8-4 and half the stars bolt?

Well Mr scout team I think you are trolling! But I will play along. First your premise is flawed, How many times has Dabo gone 8-4? Not many! How many times as He signed a team full of 5 stars? Never! Now He has signed some great teams and some 5 stars bur never a team full. it is about the X"s and O's sometimes but it is always about the Jimmy's and Joe's.

I had just graduated from CU and was only a couple weeks into my new job. I clearly remember jumping up in my cubicle that day, pumping my fist like we'd just made a monster play in an actual game. It was huge.
Following recruiting is like being a consumer of Hope. No player is a guarantee one way or the other, but in many cases, the hype is real. Definitely was with CJ.

I take comfort in the fact that as far as Clemson recruiting is concerned, when the recruiting services are finished with their analysis, matrix, rubriks, blue-chip ratio coefficients, Dabo has his check list. And no matter if the kid has world class speed, hall of fame receiver hands but also a rap sheet as long as your arm, we're not interested. There are programs that just do not care about that at all and they will use those kids up as long as they're healthy and have eligibility. Or other programs that are so desperate, they'll turn a blind eye. Proud to say we are not one of them.

Yes, stars matter.
5 star - The last 5 years 63 percent have been drafted
4 star - 36 percent
3 star - 5 percent
2 star - 1 percent
Is there future NFL talent in the 3 star bucket? Sure - but it's at 1/10th the rate of 5 stars.
