Interesting quote from Sarkisian on ESPN this AM
Nov 16, 2021, 12:53 PM
|
|
"One of the mentors of mine always told me that playing bad and winning is sometimes the worst thing that can happen to you because you don't address the issues that you have on your team and we unfortunately have lost a lot of close games, so it continues to present issues to us that we have to address."
This clearly has some application to this year, but I wonder if it also applies in some small part to the last season or two.
This is not a condemnation or criticism of anyone...just something that struck me when I read it so I thought I would share it here and hear your opinions.
Go Tigers!

yeah, ive notice it goes the other way too. A team might lose 3 or 4 games. but if watched the games they move the ball up and down the field and lose in the fourth qtr. then the fans call for the coach to be fired because they think they re not suppost to lose to a certain team. Evan when they look good on the field.

Agree wholeheartedly, but what I got out of his quote
Nov 16, 2021, 1:12 PM
|
|
was that every win is not necessarily a "win". Ugly wins, or even convincing wins, can often mask some of the things that a team needs to improve upon. Not always true that "winning cures everything".
It is a little weird, upon further reflection, that Sark would use this particular quote coming off a 5 game losing streak. Maybe I am reading it wrong.

Does it apply to seasons where we won the conference both seasons making it to the championship game one season and the playoff game the other season? GTFOOH as Every single team in college football not named Bama would take those two seasons.

I dare you to find a more loyal fan and alumnus than me. Did you even read my whole post? I said I was not criticizing or complaining - just posing what I thought was an interesting question on a message board.
Maybe I should clarify what I meant by the reference to the last season or two. Both years we won the state (last year by forfeit, LOL), the division, and the conference, and both years made the CFP. Great seasons, by most anyone's standards...including my own. But we also lost pretty convincingly in the playoffs both years, which hasn't happened previously. Were there things we maybe should have recognized as potential vulnerabilities, but didn't because we were winning so many games? I don't know, so I was curious to hear what others thought.
PS I don't think LSU would have taken those two seasons

and no one should question anything.
I know it's hard for some people, but with the elite talent, elite coaching, and numerous advantages we have, the expectations are naturally going to be higher. When those expectations aren't met, people will be disappointed.

Sark has problems on the defensive side of the ball. His offense has been pretty consistent.

Texas scored: 21 against Arkansas, 24 against OK St, 24 against Baylor, and 7 against Iowa St.
They have scored a lot of points against the terrible defenses they have played and had very modest results against any respectable defense.

First of all I think Sark contradicts himself here.
Shouldn't he be saying "fortunately" we lost our close games so we wouldn't ignore our problems, since he and his mentor believe problems get ignored with wins.
Aside from that, I think he's an idiot because in sports you either win or you lose and winning is the goal.
There is not a third column in records where people remember the ugly wins.
There is no asterisk by Clemson's national championship in 2016 for having multiple ugly wins in the first half of the season.
Now if you aren't disciplined enough to address issues when you are winning then that is a totally different discussion. Every team should have a goal to improve their weaknesses even when they are winning, and sometimes people forget that when they focus only on the win or the loss instead of how they got there.
I've never heard of a guy getting fired because he won all of his games but the wins were ugly.
Winning is never the worst thing that can happen to a coach, because the worst that can happen is a loss.

There were definitely signs over the last couple of seasons

that we had some issues, especially on offense.
It's easy to excuse a few bad games when you've had the tremendous success we have had.
Unfortunately, those issues have been magnified this year despite still having a high talent level on our team.

Agree. First Round QB and RB covered our sins the last couple years. Most everyone has figured out our offense and offense play calling. We don’t have a level 1 O line and receivers such as Amari and t Higgins have not been there Ross injuries have neutralized him

I Wonder if the "mentor" sark is talking about is Saben? Sounds like something he would say.

If Dj played like he did last year & improved with the offseason we would be undefeated right now & number 2 just behind one loss Alabama.

You're right. Most on here missed the point of the quote. If you're not a fan of Sark, that's ok. But what he says, is not that far from exactly what Dabo has said.

after a poor performance. You play the same way the next week and lose and then look sad. It comes off as bizarre to me,
