Swinney's New Contract Includes Special Alabama Buyout
Apr 26, 2019, 11:16 AM
|
|
If Swinney leaves for another school other than Alabama, his buyout would be as follows:
2019: $4 Million 2020: $4 Million 2021: $3 Million 2022: $3 Million 2023: $2 Million 2024: $2 Million 2025: $2 Million 2026: $1 Million 2027: $1 Million
If Swinney leaves for Alabama, his buyout would be as follows:
2019: $6 Million 2020: $6 Million 2021: $4.5 Million 2022: $4.5 Million 2023: $3 Million 2024: $3 Million 2025: $3 Million 2026: $1.5 Million 2027: $1.5 Million
I think it is smart of Radakovich and Swinney to both acknowledge, through the terms of the contract, a key point of conversation/concern amongst the fan base.

To be specific (and put it in basic terms), the buyout is 50% larger if Dabo leaves for Alabama.

Buyouts are low across the board, IMO

What is $6 million to a guy who makes $8.75 million/year? And he obviously would not exercise his buyout to take a pay cut. Personally, I think the base buyout should be 2 years' salary, plus the 50% Bama multiplier.

The buyout would be paid by the hiring school...not Dabo. At least that's how it works 99.9% of the time.

School. I dont see what he gains by going to Bama and being compared to Bear and Saban for the rest of his life.

Exactly. He can TRY and match what's been done at Bama

Or blaze a new path and put Clemson on that level. Much better to stay. He'd be an idiot to leave, even though they are his alma mater. He has everything he needs right here at "little old Clemson". And when he retires, people will laugh at him still saying that.

Total remaining value of the contract to anybody but Bama, 150% of the remaining value to Bama.
Still, if Bama is going to hire away a guy that makes $8.75MM/yr, $6MM one time is a bargain. Love Dabo and want him to stay...still think those buyout rates are mere speedbumps, if that.

That seems like a pretty low buyout to me.

Don't a lot of contracts have larger buyouts, especially for top football coaches?

For the record, if he were to leave, the school would pay all buyout dollars remaining on the contract. If the school buys Swinney out, it would owe him $50 million in 2019-20, $47.5 million in 2021-22, $45 million in 2023, and 100 percent of the remaining total in years 6-10.

Disregard this first statement. The author of the article I pulled from edited to mention these figures being low, but accurate. The buyouts are correct as I originally listed them, and that would be all the hiring school and/or Dabo would owe.

Dabo has earned the right to do as he pleases down the road. He has already made enough money that if he sours on Clemson, the buyout amount wouldn't keep him here.
The special Bama clause is not much more than an inside joke, because everyone knows that Bama will be the one calling when Saban hangs up his pitchfork.

There are still a lot of Bammers who say Bama will never offer him the job because of "reasons", but I agree with you.

I was hoping that those buyout amounts were cumulative, but I thought that resulted in a really high value. Makes perfect sense to me now. Thank you.

Should the buyout read:
If Swinney leaves for another school other than Alabama, his buyout would be $16 million total.
If Swinney leave for Alabama, his buyout would be $44 million total
(Additional clause: These numbers remain fixed for all years of the contract and further contract extensions unless Dabo beats Bama by more than 28 points in a future National Championship)
