Why is blatant, bald face lying ok with Trump supporters?
Jun 18, 2018, 2:00 PM
|
|
I will give credit to Trump (more to Rep. leadership) for enacting tax cuts...for now.
But I cannot understand why his constant lying isn't a problem for Trump supporters. Here he lies, again, about immigration and crime:
"Donald J. Trump ? Verified account
The people of Germany are turning against their leadership as migration is rocking the already tenuous Berlin coalition. Crime in Germany is way up. Big mistake made all over Europe in allowing millions of people in who have so strongly and violently changed their culture!"
The German crime rate is actually down to it's lowest point since 1988.

Usually it's more ignorance than lying
Jun 18, 2018, 2:06 PM
|
|
He just says whatever he's feeling at the moment, and he doesn't check to see if it's actually true. So I don't think he's trying to mislead most of the time. At any rate, he clearly doesn't care all that much about verifying the things he feels.
The reason why the people who love him don't care is that they already believe that all politicians are liars, and they think when politicians act like they're not liars (which includes taking pains to verify the things they say), it's just another way of lying. For them, at least Trump doesn't do all the hemming and hawing.

Speaking from a place of willful ignorance
Jun 18, 2018, 2:58 PM
|

Is hardly a strong defense against the accusation of lying.
(Not ascribing to you the view that it is).
Its a sad situation when making attempts to not say something untruthful is seen as somehow a less desirable process than speaking out of willful ignorance.

The worst part isn't even the initial lying/ignorance...
Jun 18, 2018, 4:52 PM
[ in reply to Usually it's more ignorance than lying ] |

it's the doubling down on the the lying/ignorance once the truth is pointed out. Going after those that point out the truth (the media/other politicians/laws) as "fake news" or the FBI/Justice Dept as out to get him not only makes him look dumb, it actually makes him dangerous. Dangerous in that he is going after the impartiality of facts and laws and the structures that they support.
As for his supporters, I agree that much of it is cynicism of government and elected officials. I've had conversations on here with posters where they've said "I would feel embarrassed if my kids became president, because it would mean I did something wrong." When that's the attitude you hold on the regarding the status of being President, then I can see why some might like Trump. There's also the expected sense of entitlement and selfishness with them (and all voters), which is that as long as they are doing fine or getting what they want then they couldn't care less what officials are doing to others.

A lot of what he says is like 1/2 true or 1/4 true
Jun 18, 2018, 5:39 PM
|
|
I think he reads something or sees something on TV, doesn't really understand it, then tweets out or says the most simplistic, provocative version of that. People get mad that he's said something false, and then other people point out that what he said wasn't entirely false. It happened right in this thread, about the subject of this thread. Then Trump goes back and claims he really was only talking about the 1/4 of his statement that was true, and that some sort of grammatical ambiguity means calling what he said false is "fake news."
Of course, it doesn't help that the frenzied media reaction to Trump has caused them to literally publish "fake news" many times.

his go to move. It's not just that he's aggressively ignorant. If you asked him what time it is, he would lie for the practice. His supporters like that he lies so easily and often because they mistakenly think it will help him get their agenda done. Plus, their cognitive dissonance is diminished if he gives them some lies to rely on.
Here's a good example from a Psychology website on Cognitive Dissonance: Cognitive dissonance was first investigated by Leon Festinger, arising out of a participant observation study of a cult which believed that the earth was going to be destroyed by a flood, and what happened to its members — particularly the really committed ones who had given up their homes and jobs to work for the cult — when the flood did not happen.
While fringe members were more inclined to recognize that they had made fools of themselves and to "put it down to experience," committed members were more likely to re-interpret the evidence to show that they were right all along (the earth was not destroyed because of the faithfulness of the cult members).

I'm with you on that. While I'm doing very well in my accounts right now, I think about all the other people this administration is negatively affecting. No amount of money I'm making is worth what he represents.
Some people are not going to care. I get it. I always go back and think about my father in law who is a retired pastor. He would gladly give a stranger all of the money in his wallet if he thought the other person was in trouble. Trump strikes me as the kind of guy that would step over a person in a ditch rather than give them a free hand to pull them out.
I honestly think that as the decades go by....we will look back on this president as a black mark on our history. I'm hopeful we will elect someone that will bring us all back together, rather than tearing us all apart.

Because - "Hey who cares what the president does as long as your life is going okay!" is a weird argument to make, particularly for the guy who used to only post the Dow average on days it went down under Obama.

OK by Democrats. Newsflash. All politicians lie and cheat. Dems and Pubs. It's their nature. Being a great list and not getting caught is the trick. Remember when Time Magazine named Hitler the Man of the Year? Total bullshirt on his part. He out did his true nature. He had his own country snowed. Then the truth finally came out. Be patient. If Trump is as bad as you say the truth will get him. It got Nixon. Should have gotten Bill. He and Hillary are living a lie.

I once had a prescription to them and read regularly. So that blows your theory out of the water. When we realize we are all Americans and in the same boat despite political party we will all be better off. I know what you are but will not resort to your hatred. I speak facts. All politicians are crooks and liars. It's the system we've created. I never vote for any career politicians. I vote for what I consider the better candidate. You have to see best as you can through the propaganda and lies.

You might want to ask your doctor where he went to med school.

Salient point.

Communism? That's pretty extreme.
No, I like our system. It doesn't have to be that way. We have the vote, the ultimate say. We can change it if we try. Throwing up my hands and accepting things are the way they are is just a cop out.
