Follow the money. If the SEIU union can get the majority of the 520,000college athletes signed up as union members, with monthly dues of $30 being paid, you are talking at least one billion and 500 million dollars. If only half, it is 750 million. Reduce it to $10 a month dues and it is still several hundred million dollars a year.

It is all about the money and everyone wants a piece of the pie. Fans are the ones who get screwed.Cause we pay for it.

You are correct, Sir. I have no idea how I got that figure. But 187 million is still a lot of money. Thanks for the correction.

The victor in all of this will be pro sports.

If players are getting paid, people will choose to watch the professionals do it, not college-level players. With the purity of college athletics now a distant memory, and a farce being made of the academic part of the deal, college athletes playing profitable sports will be little more than employees of the university. That will reduce the connection fans and alumni feel with their school, and interest will dwindle.

I for one, may be in the minority, but I watch less Pro sports today

because I don't know and don't care about the players. I used to watch pro sports more when I knew who the players were from college.

You are correct. For several years I watched very little NFL football but now that college football is becoming pro football “light” I’m becoming more of an NFL watcher. If I’m gonna watch professional football why not watch the best? It used to be that if I turned on the television and a college football game was on I’d watch it. Now, unless it’s a playoff game or a game with playoff implications, I won’t watch it ( excepting Clemson or USuC games.)

Additionally, I predict that within 5 to 10 years the players won’t even have to be students of the university they play for. I’m doubtful that when enough people lose interest Fox and ESPN will be able to pay the ridiculously high amounts they have agreed to pay for the broadcast rights. If/when viewership drops sponsors will become very nervous.

off of "student atheletes" over the past century. The UPI and AP ratings were a scam along with the bowl games. "Student Athletes" have been getting paid for years and universities/athletic depts and been lying and cheating for years to get national championships. I hope this generation of athletes finally gets the money they are owed.

News from USuC...
"Richardson was the 20th Gamecock arrested since Spurrier was hired in Nov. 2004"

Fluxus®
"As I watched the game yesterday I couldn't help but feel crushed. We beat Furman by 4 TDs, but to me it looked like we got whipped."

"George Bush, we are reliably informed by the media, has the IQ of a moron, though how he matriculated from Yale and Harvard or flew an F-106 will remain an unexplained mystery. Doubtless his father bribed the airplane to fly itself."

Get real. They arnt OWED anything.

Here is what I am have never been able to get past. The billions you refer to tend to go in to improved facilities, training tables, tutors and better accommodation for fans. It's not like there are fat cat CEO types that are buying yachts and the like. I just want to know where this billions made off of athletes idea comes from. From where I sit the majority of revenue made come out in expenses that directly support athletes

not to mention those dollars also paying for non revenue sports***

Lots of fan base there to keep it going.
