Without the millions of fervent, dedicated, and fanatical fans that colleges attract to their sports programs and participants by virtue of the school itself, there would be little interest and/or money to fund this type of league as you describe.

If he hadn't forced them to move the season to compete directly with the NFL, it might still be around. And there are so many more outlets to show the games than back then.
