I have a former student who just graduated and is headed to grad school on a limited fellowship. She needs a car and has no money. Also has no family to help.
What are some red flags to look at with this car? I had one that I got 275000 miles out of but that was probably the exception?
My recommendation was to take it somewhere to have it looked at
A good kid who has overcome all kinds of obstacles to graduate debt free and I would hate for something as basic as a car to cause issues

Biggest question is was regular maintenance done or is it a rolling collection of deferred maintenance waiting to crap out on you.
There’s nothing wrong with giving a guy $100 to get his flashlight and look around for leaks, bad hoses/belts/bushings, etc, but no one ever wants to drop another $150-200 and have a compression and leakdown test done on the engine. That’s the best test you can do to get an indication of the health of the engine.

This car will be running after we are long gone. The 3800 is one of the most reliable engines GM ever made. The car, miles and condition tell you this spent a lifetime gently ferrying grandma to church and bingo, never exceeding 30mph.

You're right that Buick grandma cars are not sexy choices, but they will run flawlessly right up there with Hondas and Toyotas. The LeSabre I bought Joonyer when he was in high school was a great car. I'd seriously be interested in the one you linked if I was in the market right now, LOL.

Perfect car for driving into town for concerts and such. Comfortable as riding on your living room couch, soaks up potholes, only needs oil changes and if you get a door ding in a parking garage or tight lot, who cares.

and get change back. A 25-year-old one-owner Buick...you KNOW that thing was loved every bit as much as the owner's chihuahua. Might even be a few leftover Bongo cards in the back seat.

Imagine the looks when she hops out with her pink hair, combat boots, and tats.
She is thinking the escape would be good for hauling field gear.

My aunt and uncle had one of those and it was awesome. The interior wasn't quite as plush as the Park Avenue, but it was really comfortable on road trips.

Those squarer Ford Escapes are some of my favorite. Had a maroon one back in 2000-2005. Had issues with brakes one time, but overall a great vehicle for my needs at the time.
