The scenery of Kennesaw Mtn

May 12, 2022, 3:21 PM

Many people come to Kennesaw to get their exercise, take in the scenery surrounding the mountain, or learn about this time period of our country's history. While today we soak in the scenery at the top of mountain, the soldiers in 1864 did so as well- even while on campaign. William McMillan of the 17th Alabama was entrenched on the top of Big Kennesaw and described the scenery as such:

“The scenery from the top of the mountain is really grand and will repay in some measure for being shot at so much. On the Northern side, villages of Yankee tents and their maneuverings. On the south side, Marietta with its beautiful residences, its military and female institutes, fields, gardens, and hedges reminds me of pictures of Italian scenery which I have seen and always believed originated in the minds of the artists. Farther in the distance, Stone Mountain and Atlanta can be seen with the naked eye. Nothing that I have ever seen can compare with the beauty of this unfortunate portion of Georgia.”

While we cannot see from atop the mountain the soldiers at their tents or marching, we can see much of what William mentioned in his letter to his cousin. Though vastly different, you can still see Marietta and Atlanta and, as long as it is a clear day, you can see Stone Mountain as well.

Next time you are at the top of the mountain, take a moment to take in the scenery and think about how different it is today than it was during William McMillan’s time.

and make all of our mountains here look like little hills. Yosemite is part of the Sierra Nevada range. Standing at Glacier Point in Yosemite is still the most jaw dropping scene I've ever experienced... you can see Half Dome, El Capitan, the waterfalls, the valley below...

Driving towards the Sierra Nevada mountain range, from Nevada into Calif:
