Regarding the SEC never taking Clem/FSU/GT based

on expansion must cover new geography.
-The Big12 took TCU. They already had 3 teams in Texas.
-The ACC took VT, it already had UVA (political circumstances, but who says such circumstances can't occur elsewhere?)
-The ACC took Miami, it aleady had Florida.
-There are more expamples in Conference USA and the Big East

all of those that you listed had more to do with the conferences strengthing their brand while expansions now have more to do with TV markets and money.

which is more appealing to the national market
Clem/UGA or NCSt/UGA
FSU/FL or VT/FL
IMO, they would gain more of a national audience rather than just NC (NCSt) and VA (VTech) markets.

I dont know why the ACC did it but the Big 12 took TCU for a couple of reasons.
1) At the time we were pretty desperate.
2) TCU is in Dallas/FW and no less than 6 schools have very large alumni bases in Dallas. OU, OSU, UT, Tech, Baylor and KU. For the two OK schools and Kansas, Dallas is the second largest alumni base for those schools. (OU/OSU's largest is OKC, KU's largest is KC)
3) The Big 12 is not making a conference network, eye balls are less important in the Big 12 where as big time prime time matchups are important.

Those conferences (Big 12 in 2011 and ACC in 2004) were trying to increase their brand and bring in quality football.
The SEC already has that. They have UGA, Tenn, UF, Bama, Aub, LSU and to a lesser extent A&M and Ark. That is 8 very strong football programs. The SEC is trying to expand their regional footprint for TV and to have a broader appeal. People in SC already watch SEC football, but people in Missouri or Texas did not.
If the SEC needed to stabilize itself and/or add football first schools, Clemson would be an excellent choice. But at the moment they just aren't what the SEC is looking for.

would not be a "stand alone" in a cable package. Conference expansion is all about money, not recruiting. The SEC brand for recruiting is the best in the nation. 7 of the Top 20 in the Rivals recruiting rankings were SEC to only 2 for the Big 12.

The BigXII expanded out of weakness\necessity to maintain enough members to have a conference by NCAA rules.
The ACC expanded this past year out of weakness to (attempt to) insure it's own survival if all the dominoes starting falling and the ACC\BigEast started getting poached from by the power conference.
The ACC added BC\VT\Miami to get to the magic number 12 and be able to have a conference championship game. Miami is a national brand and is not just a regional TV market. VT was added because the Virginia legislature strong armed UVA to make it happen. Syracuse was going to be 3rd team.
The SEC moved out of strength and could take the best teams to accomplish those goals.
If this were 1992 and the SEC was looking for 2 teams, Clemson and FSU would have been perfect fits. FSU was offered in 1992 as a matter of fact. This is a completely different landscape.
