The SB Halftime show in 2010

Featured The Who. From the moment I heard who was performing, I rolled my eyes. I shouted aloud to anyone who would listen "NOBODY WANTS TO HEAR A WASHED-UP ROCK BAND PERFORM".
I was younger then. I didn't have any appreciation for classic rock. My attitude was the same as the year before when Bruce Springsteen performed. And years before with the Rolling Stones and Paul McCartney.
"WE DON'T CARE ABOUT THESE OLD WHITE DUDES. PLAY TO YOUR DEMOGRAPHIC, NFL PEOPLE!"
Years have passed, and I'm older now. Not a whole lot wiser, mind you, but I get it. The NFL wants to put someone in the halftime that appeals to a relatively broad section of their fanbase. That's why The Who was touching the youthful memories of boomers in 2010 while I was busy doing anything but watching the show.
It's 2024. The trends in music are different now. The fan base is larger. The NFL fan base is composed of more women now than ever before.
An artist like Usher made perfect sense. He's old enough to have appeal to people like me who "grew up" listening to him. He's young enough to hit the younger demographic. It also helps to bring in talent like H.E.R. that younger viewers recognize immediately.
My point? The show last night was great. It wasn't my all-time favorite, but it was entertaining, relatively clean enough for my daughters to watch, and made my wife and I smile. These were songs that we fell in love with in college.
You might not be an Usher fan. That's fine. You don't have to watch the show. Just don't resort to subtle racism over the fact that someone you don't like performing at an event nobody required you to watch anyway.
As an aside, a few years after the Springsteen show I absolutely fell in love with his music and wouldn't mind him performing again. As long as there were some younger artists alongside him.

Girls on stripper poles sure does set a great, clean example for our youth.

Well said. It’s sad how depressed some of these people are.

I generally have no interest in the artists performing the halftime shows. That being said I thought Bruno Mars was pretty good a few years ago. Other than that I can’t remember a recent one that I enjoyed.
