Lunge boaters, GITT with your go-to vinyl cleaner/mildew

remover.
Pulled the cover off to start getting ready for spring/summer and this is the first year I've had any significant mildew on the vinyl. Not sure if it was just and abnormally wet(LOL) winter or I probably need to get the cover cleaned as well.
So other that the bleach I plan to drink, the bag of ##### I plan to eat and the five gallon bucket of gasoline I've already got on stand-by, what do jounge?

The only one that works

I have tried every brand out there and this is the ONLY one that works.
After I get it clean, I use 303 protectant to maintain.

This is the answer, Starbrite. 303 is great for protection, but not for cleaning.
IF it is really bad mildew, you can user a sprayer and do 1/2 bleach and 1/2 water to eat it off the seams. But know that if you do this every season, it will eat them away after 4-5 springs of using this method.

I'd go with the mildest cleaner that works.
Mar 11, 2019, 11:08 AM

Last week, I had some mildew on my seats that simple car washing soap that I let sit for a few minutes and then used a scrub brush got rid of. I wouldn't be spraying bleach on it unless that's the only thing that will get rid of it. Bleach will rot the threads. If you have to use bleach, dilute on put it on a rag, then put the rag on the areas with the worst mildew.
I've also used cleaning vinegar (not vinegar you put on collards) in a spray bottle. Make sure to hose it off as completely as possible.
Unless you want to ruin the coating on the vinyl, I wouldn't use purple power on anything.

detergent and water. The tough stuff I'll soft scrub, and then treat with Mcguire's vinyl/rubber protectant.
Per Ship Shape TV this weekend something about vinyl changed around 2010, making it way more susceptible to mold and mildew. However, Sunbrella has come to the rescue with a new mold resistant vinyl if you need to reupholster anyway.

No telling how many boats Sea Hunt has had to reupholster because of it.
I wonder if Sunbrella makes that new stuff there in Anderson?

you'll do less harm with bleach if you drink it

bleach will kill the mold but it will kill all of the stitching at the same time.
I agree with the star brite suggestion. And have used 303 protectant for about 8 years on boat and jetskis and have not noticed any fading, so maybe it works.... hard to tell
I also spray scotch guard on my covers ever couple of years, which seems to help.
Pro Tip: When you go to put your boat up for winter, spray some water based bug-spray around the perimeter of boat (under the cover) to kill spiders. Spider shid is highly acidic and those fockers will shid all over the perimeter of your boat - it looks like mildew and is really hard to clean.

avoid bleach, but for different reasons than stated so far
Mar 12, 2019, 8:29 AM

Yeah, it’ll deteriorate the threads, but threads are easy. The bigger problem with any cleaner containing bleach, alcohol, acetone, or petroleum distillates is that they rapidly degrade the vinyl by leaching the oils out of the vinyl itself. Ever felt vinyl that is stiff and feels more like a piece of paper than vinyl? Its oils are gone and it’s shot.
So yeah, that magic eraser may work like a champ, but it’s cutting your seats life spans drastically.

Biggest problem is it kills the protective top coat.

Even if you do a quick wipe to get a pen mark off or similar, it works, but you just took all the protection off that area.

The problem is that you can’t kill the mold on the fabric backing of the vinyl from the front side of the vinyl. For chronic mold issues you have to remove the actual seat skin and treat the backside too.
It’s a pain involving about 40 billion staples and lots of swearing, but it isn’t rocket science.
