My, how things change as time goes on. The new design to include Tiger Walk is very nice! I'm sure some IPTAY donors are going to hate losing their parking spots in Lot 5 Rogers Lot. As you might be able to see from the attached photos from 1962, this lot has been prime football parking for over 60 years and also a student parking lot during weekdays.
As a kid, I learned to ride my back in this lot when it was just grass and dirt. There were drainage holes in several places in the field. My first bike ride ended with me running into one of the drains and disappearing 5 feet below ground level and my dad laughed as I crawled out and he helped pull the bike back to the top of the ground.

They were called prefabs. I think they were built during WWII. They were used for married student housing for a while and when I started in 1980 they were used for incoming freshmen. There were also prefabs near the P&A Building where the Brooks Center parking lot is now on the east side of campus. I lived in a prefab in the group on the east side my freshman year. What a blast.

Those small “square” buildings are married-student housing, using old (military-surplus) pre-fab buildings (aluminum, as I recall?) that were obtained from the military as some of the prior war efforts “wound down.”

I have been parking in Lot 5 for 23 years. My father who played on the ‘48 team was here with us until he passed. I hope I don’t have to move. I heard there will be 170 parking places relocated out of the 800. ?

Great old photos. Given the size of those old oak trees in lot 5 I had assumed they were there for 100+ years. The photos taught me they’re not, and were planted as part of an improvement in the past ~ 50 years. I’m curious to see what trees will be saved and what will be taken down. I read the IPTAY release to say the trees are going to be removed and replaced. They are beautiful but they’ve totally destroyed the pavement. I’m sure they’ll do a great job keeping the aesthetics and replacing the trees. Excited to see it progress.

My cynical side says that we gutted lot 4 for a softball field and turned lot 5 into a 8K a year parking lot.

I think this is a badly needed upgrade. Tiger Walk is one of Dabo’s signature contributions to Clemson and has become part of our tradition. It deserves a better venue than a broken up asphalt lot. This will be an area that visitors will want to see and get pictures of even when it is not game day, much like getting pictures of the rock from Williamson Road. Not to mention how much better it will represent Clemson when parts of Tiger Walk are shown during the game broadcasts like it was Saturday. Yes, it will cause the loss of somewhere around 150 parking spots but that is the price for progress. We parked in lot 4 for several years but had to move when the softball stadium was built. We decided to go off campus at that time and we now enjoy that space just as much. I am very excited to see the finished product next season.
