Monday thoughts: Did Newton's presence distract Watson?

There was plenty to talk about after Clemson's 19-13 win at Auburn Saturday night, including the kick that didn't happen, the presence of Cam Newton and the emergence of Dexter Lawrence. Full Story »

I think Auburn is the second most talented team on our schedule. I think they have a shot at finishing the year with 2 losses. Alabama looked incredible or SoCal should not have been ranked.

Louisville's QB may be the best on our schedule but we have not seen FSU yet.

I think Auburn's kitchen sink offense is going to be really difficult to stop this year.
I hope the defense is really good, but at this point we only know they played well against us...

Impatient Fans

Sep 5, 2016, 7:40 AM

This page is going to be a flurry of complaints from we fans for several weeks because it might take an FSU win before Clemson begins to be talked about like we were last year after the Notre Dame win. Unless - Louisville knocks off FSU - and a Clemson win against Louisville gets the Tigers "popular" again in early October. Expectations are high - we all want to be talked about - and we will be. The offense is not a problem. Believe we wanted a quick game as we weren't sure what our defense was going to do with the scheming of the Auburn O. As a result - we ran the ball a fair amount. Watson threw the ball exceptionally well - just not a ton of yards or attempts. Our D had more TFLs than any game last year. If anything, we should still be concerned about the D - not that they didn't play well - but rather what they played against which was the silliest Offense I've ever seen. I think the D will be just fine however. The most disappointing thing and largest area of concern for me is Special Teams. This was the weakest part of 2015 and it's carrying over. Our Kicker has a kick off go out of bounds, didn't kick them all into the end zone, misses a PAT, we don't go after blocking punts, we don't return punts, KORs are lame, etc. Here's to hoping The Tigers don't have to play anymore prevent D - they'll all bring back the "Clemsoning" term if we do.

regards to the field goal and it is a coaches call, we pay him a lot of money to make that call so live with it!! Imagine if you will that a snap went awry and one of those speedsters rambled 80 yards.....there were a few of those freak plays last year (FSU/GT...Mich/Mich St) and our defense was playing lights out so I DO understand. Would I have done it...it doesn't matter, I'm not the coach. Great job TIGERS!!!

What is troubling about not kicking the FG is the thought process . Fear of blah blah blah. What is the message to the FG team? We didn't look, act, or coach like a championship team. Perhaps that is unrealistic. After what we have seen this weekend would we have wanted to open up with Alabama, ND, or Texas? Houston? We may be that good, but we got a whole lot of improving to do.

The message to the field goal team is

Sep 5, 2016, 7:55 AM

heres the rub with your argument

Sep 5, 2016, 8:17 AM [ in reply to The message to the field goal team is ]

If Dabo felt the best way to win was to run down the clock and not kick a FG, fine (although I disagree). He should have put DW under center on third down with Gallman in a safety position. Snap the ball, take a step back and wait until the defense gets close, go to a knee. Do the same thing on 4th down. Then Auburn has probably less than 15 seconds to beat you, not 40.
He is paid huge money to be on top of these types of issues and scenarios. Frankly, I don't think he thought about what to do until it was fourth down and got nervous. Bad decision and we are lucky it worked out as the defense was very tired and our secondary/LBs are not stellar in coverage, except for Tank, who is a stud.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgtbn_110.gif flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That removes any hope of a first down.

Sep 5, 2016, 8:58 AM

Gallman's running out of bounds threw a kink in a good plan.

Gallman probably has a pretty sizeable sense

Sep 5, 2016, 9:30 AM [ in reply to heres the rub with your argument ]

of his abilities, which is understandable. It's entirely possible that he either thought he simply wasn't gonna get pushed out of bounds, or even that he forgot the clock would stop while he was in the heat of the moment trying to find the first down. I kind of agree, though. I have a suspicion that, based on Dabo's comments after the game, he may have just had a brain-freeze and not realized what distance the field goal was. He mentioned something about a 41-yard field goal, when it actually would have been more like 34 yards, which is much more of a gimmee than 41 yards is.

Here's why I was ticked about the no FG:

Sep 5, 2016, 7:59 AM

Dabo and staff have had an entire off season to fix/ improve our special teams and they haven't. If you don't have enough faith in your kicking game to attempt a chip shot FG, then you've got a serious problem.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

So proud of our Tigers

Sep 5, 2016, 8:18 AM

Yes I wanted a crushing totally dominant performance. But I am pretty excited about our team. Don't listen to the haters. We went into a very hostile environment and walked away with another W. Can you imagine when Austin Bryant gets back?

Things we need to fix immediately: 4th quarter late hit, more WRs involved, TE play, Gallman needs to remember to get down to run off most of those last secs.
Things everyone needs to chill about: DW4, not kicking the fg at the end of the game.
I think it was a much closer call about the fg than most people think. Gallman picking that up would have been same effect as making fg (we win). A missed fg or a blocked kick gives them better field position than if we failed to convert. I put Wayne picking up 4 yards at the same odds as us making that field goal in that situation I suspect people upset had $ on the gambling line. Me - I just want W after W after W....

Sep 5, 2016, 10:40 AM

Yes, and the longer the field goal attempt, the lower the trajectory you have to kick it to get the distance ... which means a better chance of getting it blocked.

Regarding the offense, they will heat up quickly. This was their first game in a hostile environment and the noise likely was deafening. I was amazed at how similar that stadium looked to Death Valley and it must have been weird to be in a very similar stadium, with most fans wearing orange, cheering loudly when we were on offense, not defense ... perhaps at a subconscious level that must might have been a little confusing.

Look at Huegels numbers at 40....a chip shot indeed. Dabo made yet another snafu in game management. He is yet to learn how to go for the jugular. See Louisville, ND, Louisville again. Those were games if he hadn't gotten conservative, it wouldn't have been close anyway. One of these days he is going to lose one of these games by playing conservative. And why play prevent defense?! Like the great coaches say:"all prevent defense does is prevent you from winning". Dabo has a little something to learn about finishing teams off. Stick to the game plan. Or, we won't make it to Tampa this year. Another idiotic call like Saturday night & we may not be so lucky again. That game did not have to be that close. Even my 12 year old child knew the fg was the obvious choice. He made his bed, and he's too stubborn to admit he blew it. Imagine Tiger Nation of the Hail Mary connected!!

Sep 5, 2016, 8:12 AM

but what about 4th down conversions. Anybody know Auburn's conversion rate on 4th down?

Going for it on 4th down repeatedly is usually the sign of either a desperate team or a super confident team. I think Auburn was in desperation mode offensively. They just weren't very good on offense and they knew it.

I didn't count them, but it seemed like Auburn kept drives alive by converting a lot of 4th downs after we had stopped them on 3rd down.

Not that it mattered in the long run, but it was sort of frustrating for us defensively to have Auburn in 4-down territory every time they crossed mid-field.

Re: New Story: Monday thoughts: Did Newton's presence distract Watson?

Sep 5, 2016, 8:34 AM

I know Im probably going to probably get called a coot for this one, but here goes. I dont agree with this at all. There is no doubt it was the wrong call to not kick the field goal, and just because it worked out dont make it the right call. There is actually no correlation to winning and making the right call on a play. They had two receivers in the end zone with one defender on the first hail mary. Was that the right call? It worked but definitely the wrong call. If he kicks the field goal and makes it, the game is out of reach. Heugel is 15-16 in his career from 30-39 yards. If you miss the field goal they take over in pretty much the exact same place, with virtually the same time remaining on the clock. No rain to make a wet ball, and we had already game simulated field goal 4 times with none close to being blocked. Field goal was the right call. Dabo missed on that one, but luckily it didn't cause US to lose the game. GO TIGERS!! 1-0

Re: New Story: Monday thoughts: Did Newton's presence distract Watson?

Sep 5, 2016, 12:36 PM

So? What's your point. Even if it was a bad call, do you want to fire Dabo for making a bad call, that ultimately won the game?
The objective is to win games, not make what fans consider to be the right call.
Clemson won the game, end of story. It isn't doing one single positive thing for Clemson to continue questioning the call. Right or wrong, we won.

Sep 5, 2016, 8:36 AM

On offense and the way they were getting chunks with the one quarter back, had Gus left him in, we could be looking at a different outcome. We should have scored at least 10 more points, and I think we were pretty lucky to come out on top Saturday. After the third quarter my confidence fell drastically.

We're going to improve but the question is how we are going to react in our next big game. Hopefully it's more like the way we played in the playoff and less like we played Saturday.

I'm not surprised we looked sloppy on offense. I'm not saying I expected it, but I'm not surprised. Remember when Tajh Boyd and company first came out with Chad Morris' offense? They looked comical and got booed. It's the first game and everyone looked tight, including Watson. Now we have two more games to fix those issues before we go to Atlanta. After seeing how our defense played against Auburn, I feel fantastic about our team this year. The offense will get heated up soon enough.

Re: New Story: Monday thoughts: Did Newton's presence distract Watson?

I don't think that Cam Newton or anybody else had a thing to do with a down that DW4 played. The only thing that DW4 has done since the Bama game 7 months ago, is worked out getting his body stronger, and practice. He only gets a few series of playing time in during our in stadium scrimmages. He is rusty and it showed, and only playing in actual games where the other teams are playing their hardest to beat us, that is where he will regain his sharpness. It had been 7 months since DW4 had been in a real game situation with another team trying to break him in half until Aubarn. He will get his A game sharpness back soon, and at Aubarn was a start. I hope that Dabo will let DW4 play most of our next two games bc he will need to be sharp at GT, and through the season. We are 1-0, and every team we play will try their best to put a 1 where that 0 is.

Disagree.. Clemson held back the entire game except that last drive for a TD. That was the only time they ran uptempo offense and how many different plays did you see? They ran 2 plays the except the jet sweep with McCloud. Dabo has done this the last 3 years. I have ideal of why but it was obvious. If didn't see it, I would have to question how much one was really watching?

Cam Newton was not a distraction to DW. That's comical, a) it implies DW didn't play well, as if he was dropping his own TD passes. And b) that he called all his own plays. Geez.

Does anyone on TNet have anything good to say about Cam? I'm not even a Panther fan btw. Of the article didn't use direct language because it was "just a thought"...no balls to say it straight up.

Sep 5, 2016, 11:49 AM

No need to hand off. Have DW hold the ball for a few seconds and kneel. No risking a fumble. Clock runs to about 10 seconds. 4th down play is DW running around for a couple of seconds and lobbing one OB. Game over or a few seconds left.

I really wanted to leave the poor dead horse alone, but I gotta make 1 last whuppin'. Sorry, horse.

"We will never know for sure what the right call would have been. "---

I'd say the correct call is the one that gives you the best chance to win. Maybe considering the previous high snap (which resulted in a made FG btw), it goes from very obvious to somewhat debatable, but I still can't see how the FG isn't the correct call in that situation.

"The field goal could have been blocked. The snap could have been fumbled. The field goal could have been good. "---

The 4th down run could have been fumbled. The snap could have been over Watson's head. Why are so many scared of a FG block, but ignore the bad things that can happen by going for it?

"We will never know for sure, and Swinney’s decision – whether you like it or not – worked. "---

I would say that the decision did not work. The decision was to kick a FG or go for 4th and 4. A success of either would effectively end the game. He went for it and didn't make it. Auburn proceeded to have two throws into the endzone to win, both of which were reasonably close to succeeding. I'd say the same if he tried a FG and missed. It would have been the correct call, but not worked.

OK, enough about that. Go Tigers, beat Georgia Tech (safe to assume Troy and SC St won't be a problem)

Sep 5, 2016, 3:30 PM

Zero. Clemson held back the entire game except that last drive for a TD. That was the only time they ran up tempo offense and how many different plays did you see? They basically ran 2 plays except the jet sweep with McCloud. Which brings me to another topic. How good is the defensive line at Auburn? Tigers did nothing to wear them down. Clemson took on the best D-line last year (Alabama). Saban himself said that they were gassed. DaBo held them to minimum plays to run as he has done at the beginning of the last 3 years. Don't understand why nor do I understand why he allows to be close where 1 plays could kill your entire season. They ran the basic plays at slower pace.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

call timeout before 3rd down run

Sep 5, 2016, 5:55 PM

Look folks, it was the RIGHT decision because we won the game. It's like a math test. Doesn't matter how you get the answer as long as it is the right answer!! But, the ONLY thing I question is why not use your last timeout after 2nd down. Let the play clock run down to 1 sec, call timeout, call the Gallman run and remind him not to get anywhere near the sideline. If we do that, then we can run it down to almost nothing on the clock even with a 4th down run.
