H.S. Player: Opt Out Senior Yr. To Prepare for College!

Oct 22, 2022, 10:50 PM

So, I get the argument a little bit about college players! I don't like it or even agree with it; but I somewhat get the thinking.

Opting out of your last year of H.S. ball seems like "something else"!

1st. the only way you become a better football player is to play football.

2nd. having the measurables, weight, height, bench press and such is great - "if you can also play football"!

3rd. how many college games then? I mean, it's not about playing the best team sport in the world to this player. It's about "them"! Why play college ball at all then? For fear you may get hurt>!!!!

To be fair; I guess the kids h.s. isn't that good and he couldn't do anything else; but perhaps help them win a few more games.
But, more than likely you aren't playing as a freshman anyway. Go play ball!

Huge - enormous red flag that "football isn't fun to this kid instead it's business only"! Which on the surface sounds like a good thing.
Until you consider; the players who end up having successful careers "love the game"! They get their money and all: "but they really loved the game itself 1st which is why they got so good at it"!

If this trend keeps going do you all think it's a good thing for CFB or bad?

I suspect that very few of the business first recruits

will amount to anything and it won't take long before schools will avoid going after them.

From that perspective they will have little effect on college football

I hope you are right!

College coaches should have an unwritten agreement "not to offer them"! Reason being; it will encourage more kids to do it.
Now, you are evaluating a kid on their Junior year or maybe Sophomore year or even just their measurables. Which can be fools gold sometimes!

Same kid would probably play a year or two then opt out to get ready for the NFL on a coach as well.

Bad business I think. But, I respect the fact, it's their choice. Just don't think it's a wise decision.

I understand this may be old news: I am just late.

Still!

SMH at this.

The "Me Culture" is in full swing

I wouldn't recruit a player that does this because he'll do the same to you in year 3 when you have a couple of losses. He'll leaving you hanging.

I have no problem with a guy's right to make this decision

I do think it's a very bad decision and the results will bear this out. He will learn the hard way and others will learn from his blunder.

High school players are still in their very formative years and he'll miss out on a lot of football and personal development. Selling his soul to football when there is a 95% chance he never plays in the NFL is worse than playing the lottery.

Comparing this to what Jamar Chase and Micah Parsons did during COVID is insane IMO.

I seriously doubt this becomes a trend.
