There had been a great deal of lamenting in this forum about game day at Death Valley. Indulge an old boomer here. This is not something that I have seen (and heard) just at Death Valley, but at every sports venue I have been to in the last 10 years or so.

There is a school of thought out there that we must be entertained and our senses stimulated every second we are in attendance. There will be no down time. Heaven forbid any silence or drop in any level of excitement. If there's a timeout or any stoppage in the action, cue the music, cue the jumbotron, we must be kept at fever pitch at all times!

The problem with that is that it cannot be sustained. If we are over stimulated by all the hype music and videos , we have little left for the action on the field. We, in essence, shut down. The only way to really appreciate the excitement is to also appreciate the down time.

I can remember a time when the cheerleaders would have everyone in the student section remain quite. Absolutely no noise whatsoever. Until the opposing side broke the huddle and then we went crazy. So loud you couldn't hear the person next to you. The opposition was shell shocked by the sudden outburst. That would be such a cool thing to try and pull off these days. But good luck. Hard to do when "Jump around" is blasting away.

The old "Silent Treatment" was very effective in Littlejohn many times

Years ago, at basketball games, the Clemson crowd would be given newspapers (remember newspapers?) and during pregame, the fans would hold up the newspapers as if reading them and would not cheer at all during either teams' warmups or the opposing team's introduction of starters. THEN, the Littlejohn crowd would erupt when the Tigers were introduced just before tipoff. The Silent Treatment was great as long as it didn't happen every game.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, if you think the piped in noise at Death Valley is too much, you should attend a Clemson Gymnastics meet. Nonstop pop music blares from 30 minutes before the match until the very, very end and the teenage girls in attendance sing at the top of their lungs to Taylor Swift.
