The time has come to fire John Swofford...
Dec 4, 2006, 7:50 AM
|
|
John Swofford once again showed his anti-Clemson bias this weekend by literally strong-arming the Gator Bowl to take Georgia Tech, a team that just played in Jacksonville and a team that could not even bring 10,000 fans to the ACCCG.
Swofford has promised that the ACC will pay the difference between the tickets GT sales and their normal allotment. The amount that the ACC is out of pocket could easily exceed $500,000. The true shame of it is that had he let the Gator do what it wanted and picked Clemson, the ACC would have received its normal bowl proceeds. The exclusion that allowed the Gator to pick Clemson was apparently already a verbal agreement between the ACC and Gator, and now Swofford has reneged. The absolute cost of the move by Swofford is (1) $500,000 or so and (2) a destroyed relationship with the Gator.
So let's recap, Swofford has:
1. Ruined the ACC Baseball Tournament by putting it in the most obscure, out of the way places (Salem, St Pete, Jax) just so that Mike Martin and the other crybabies in the conference feel like Clemson does not have an unfair advantage.
2. Pushed for Boston College to be in the ACC, a school that has no business in our conference. If you did not believe that before, one trip to Chestnut Hill solidified that statement.
3. Ruined the ACC Championship Game by trying to take the cheap way out and putting it in Jacksonville (the middle of nowhere). Swofford is so short-sighted that he does not realized that the rent he would have to pay to the Richardsons in Charlotte is far exceeded by the additional revenue he would generate by having the game in the town.
4. Completely botched the Bowl Tie-ins with the expansion. Let's take a look at the top 4 bowls for the major conferences...
ACC: BCS, Peach, Gator, Champs Big Ten: BCS, Outback, Capital One, Alamo Big Twelve: BCS, Cotton, Gator, Holiday SEC: BCS, Cotton, Capital One, Peach
A truly stark contrast there for anyone who has ever been to the Champs bowl. The stadium is a dump, in a bad part of town, and on a crappy day.
All that said, we, the member institutions of the ACC, are paying Swofford a healthy sum to ruin our conference. Swofford made $747,106 last year, more than $250,000 more than Slive (SEC, $479,531) and Tranghese (Big East, $434,924). Is he worth this amount of money?
It is time that Swofford was fired and the conference brought in a commissioner who could lead the conference into the future and had no biases against certain teams......

Swofford did the right thing by getting the conference game loser into a good bowl. No, it didn't help Clemson cause we would rather be in the Gator. But at least it sends the better team to the better bowls. Ga. Tech didn't deserve to play for a conference title and then get sent to Nashville.

The difference in the ACCCG and The SECCG is like watching AAA baseball and then going to a big league playoff game.
If anyone on here ran a business the way The ACC is run, your tail would be eating Govt. Cheese.

Clemson shouldn't depend on this guy to determine that fate in a bowl game. We had the chance to be anywhere we wanted but this is what we played for and got. As much as I don't like him, can't blame it on him or the ACC. Shoulda,,coulda,,but loss to Maryland..and BC..and VT..

entire conference. That being said, whats best for everyone is that the team that loses in the ACC title game gets to go to a better bowl than a team that doesn't even play for it. BC got screwed last year and Swofford said that wouldn't happen again. I'm glad he didn't.

all the bowl proceeds go into a pot and it is split evenly between the schools.....(No matter who goes where)....now that Swofford has agreed to ante up for the tickets GT does not buy (which could exceed $500,000) that "pot" is much smaller........

No....
Dec 4, 2006, 8:33 AM

(1) the ACC was allowed to sell ADs to recoup their money
(2) it was either Boise or bust for us....so the ACC was going to pony up some money to get the bowl proceeds...a net positive for the ACC...
not the same issue here.....
a #### shame that the Gator did not pick Texas vs WVU...then the ACC would have been short a bowl game and some school (BC) would have been SOL.....and Swofford would be in hot water....

I remember people saying it gave us another month of practice, but a 6-5 team should stay home. That team had no business playing in a bowl.

but they still helped us get a bowl, deserved or not.
But you could look at it the other way, the only ones competing for that spot were from other conferences, so its not like he was favoring Clemson over another confernece team.

I agree about the baseball location, and they should have put to Football game in Charlotte. Would have better attendance probably. The teams this year may have caused some of the lack of atmosphere.
I don't agree about BC, sportswise their solid.
Also, GaTech should have gotten the better bowl over us this year. We need to do it on the field not rely on a gift.

The fact of the matter is we lost to Maryland (enough said), Boston College (who you say doesn't deserve to be in the ACC, South Carolina (who completely dominated us offensively, big plays kept us in the game), and Virginia Tech (who again...dominated us). The fact is we had a mediocre season...typical Clemson football

Correct me if I'm wrong, but there was never any way the Gator could take Clemson over GT per the contract. GT was 7-1 in conference Games. Clemson 5-3. You have to be within one game to be selected over a team with a better conf. record.
Besides, as stated before, we are 5-3 in conf. Only 3 of our 8 wins came against bowl eligible competition. We are where we belong.
