The Clemson-Carolina arguments

1) Spurrier is more experienced than Dabo, that's why he beats us.
But, Leggett is far more experienced than Holbrook who is now 5-1 versus Leggett.
2) Carolina Stadium is brand new, a $30 million dollar palace, Kingsmore has been only renovated.
But, Colonial Life Arena is a palace compared to Littlejohn, but we own them in hoops.
3) Carolina has more money and are spending it wisely. Could be some truth to this, but they have always had more money and we dominated them for years. Plus, we wasted a good bit of money on a Littlejohn renovation, paying off Bowden, giving TDP a big annuity when Barker should have fired him, increasing Dabo's salary by a million, etc.

Holbrook before the series started and he said that this is NOT just another series, that this was Clemson/Carolina and that it meant a LOT. we need to have that sense of urgency! I think the BIG difference is the philosophy of the two coaches----Leggett playing small ball and Holbrook giving his players the oportunity to swing away on a 2-0 pitch. I am NOT a basher but I think we need to open it up a little bit, we moved homeplate close to the outfield fence to what---give us a better shot at advancing the runner over on a sacrifice bunt!!!

Same as Dabo started out saying it isn't a rivary and never will be??? Ran his mouth talking crap back at Spurrier when he should have taken the high road.
Now we have lost 5 straight and the coots take it seriously each year! Yes it seems the coaches approach the series differently and that has to change!
I am still pissed at the pitcher who threw a 1-2 count pitch right down the middle to English in that last game!

Kinda early to say if the talent has evened out but I think it has. Looking at the last football game and this series of baseball with them I absolutely believe it is a mental thing. I think we had the better football team and looked like we were going to prove it on their home field until we handed it to them with 6 turnovers..same with baseball, if look at the damage each of those errors did, we could have taken 2 out 3..thats 10 extra outs we gave them and they made us pay with each of them. I believe in baseball it has a lot to do with coaching..they actually looked like the bad news bears at times.

the routine errors is what we got to quit. luckily the 2 sunday did not hurt. other than those we played great in the field. picked off a coot at first and one at third on the bunt. slaton threw a seed to home that would have ended the game had okey just held on. just make the routine plays and this crowd will be just fine.

Sysco...I agree with your talent assessment. When it comes to equal talent, then it boils down to coaching. We have better coaches and it shows. I hope Martin will follow suit but that remains to be seen.

Tanner laid a solid foundation for the program that the $30m state of the art Carolina Stadium was built on. Stadiums are important to sports like baseball that can't award everyone full scholarships... it shows their commitment to the program. & winning twice in Omaha makes them a premier program nationally. But Clemson is a top 10-15 program too that just can't get the monkey off its back.
Obviously, facilities don't matter as much in basketball, but I think we are seeing the advantages of SEC money that they're leveraging. & as I've preached before, we need to be prepared for the SEC Network because it's not only going to bring in truck loads of cash, but more exposure in our recruting footprint which is going to really hurt us & the 'Noles.

SCAR has only had a money advantage since the BCS era. Conference payouts were not much different in the 90's and before TV money became the primary source of revenue for schools IPTAY helped Clemson be one of the better funded athletic programs, did it not?
Money has a tremendous impact on the success of a program......kids like nice things and the best coaches expect to be paid the most. Money is a big deal.

Yes, compared to Clemson, USC's advatange only started in the BCS era... maybe a few years earlier from SEC expansion and the resurgence of Alabama and emergence of Florida.... But, what we've really seen was what occurred from SCAR pre-SEC to being in the SEC. Pre-SEC, especially during the Sparky Woods era, they had floundered to almost a mid-major team. ECU, Southern Miss, etc. The SEC gave them instant resources to build their program even when it went on a 22 game losing streak. IMO, i'm not sure that Clemson could have survived that w/ the ACC. Money allows you to sustain & revitalize a program that is down, which is why you can expect Tennessee to rebound soon. The SEC will be getting more money & exposure, which is becoming a competitive barrier. Programs like Clemson and FSU have to keep winning at a high level to keep up.

We've made good with the SEC Money (True), but it has
a lot more to do with decisions made by Mike McGee
beginning in the mid 90s. We got into the SEC but were
still doing business "As usual" with the plan laid down
since Kind Dixon and earlier ADs had the program. USC
was trying to keep the fans happy by charging the lowest
prices for all our games, and saving money by "making
do" with the facilities we had for years. Problem was,
fans got tired of losing, but didn't want to pay extra
for games / concession etc.. to try to improve it. They
wanted a 7 course Banquet for McDonald's prices.
McGee got the ball rolling by getting the BOT and Prez,
to at least shell out more money for a NAME coach instead
of paying cut rate salary for a perceived up and coming
young coach. Still didn't them to buy into raising ticket
prices, but it was a start. His last act as AD was to
replace Holtz (name) with yet another proven winner. He
worked it out to bring in Steve Spurrier and help locate
his replacement by getting Eric Hyman. Spurrier got busy
with "minor" upgrades of the facilities, and helped start
the ball rolling with the major changes that came in the
next few years. Hyman was able to do that, by stating to
get ticket prices in line with the average SEC programs.
Fans ranted and raved and a lot of them threatened to
pull out of the Gamecock Club because of it, but Hyman
stuck to it. We are now staring to see the results of the
major changes that Hyman brought about early in his tenure.
It is still a work in progress, but our recent run of
success is not luck, it is the result of finally getting
our income on a "somewhat" competitive level with the
upper tier schools in the SEC. We still have work to do,
but after 4/5 years of Spurrier "doing what he could, with
what he had", the results are staring to come around.
SEC Money with the ESPN deal, and the shared wealth from
bowl game results have definitely helped speed up the
rebuild process, but it was the plan set in motion by
McGee / Hyman that is paying off now.
