The best basketball programs at football schools

Jan 20, 2014, 1:09 PM

In a follow-up to the last post about Thad Matta at Ohio State, I came up with a list of the schools that would qualify for football first:

ACC - Clemson, FSU, VT
BigTen - OSU, Michigan, Wisconsin, Nebraska
SEC - All but Vandy, Kentucky, Missouri
PAC12 - Oregon
BIG12 - Texas, Oklahoma, Texas Tech

Any schools missing?

They are able to maintain top-flight basketball programs, even though football is clearly king.

Paul "Bear" Bryant was Kentucky's head football coach for eight seasons.

Bear Bryant came to Kentucky from Maryland. Under Bryant, the Wildcats won the 1947 Great Lakes Bowl, lost the 1950 Orange Bowl, won the 1951 Sugar Bowl and the 1952 Cotton Bowl Classic. In final AP polls, the Wildcats were ranked #11 in 1949, #7 in 1950, #15 in 1951, #20 in 1952 and #16 in 1953. The final 1950 poll was taken prior to the bowl games; Kentucky then defeated undefeated and #1 ranked Oklahoma in the Sugar Bowl, ending the Sooners 31-game winning streak. Bryant won SEC Coach of the Year honors in 1950, the year some Wildcats fans claim the Wildcats won the national championship. Bryant left after eight seasons to accept the head football coach position at Texas A&M.

I always like the story where Rupp woin the conf in hoops and got a new cadillac ahd the same year Bear won the conf. and got a nice new cigarette lighter. If that is really true it is pretty telling

Oklahoma State and Baylor in the Big 12. Oklahoma is decent this year, but not usually. Texas Tech is awful.
