Idaho Falls, ID > GITT if you have been here. We are

potentially planning a trip to Jackson, WY this summer to visit some friends. While out there, we will certainly hit up Idaho and Montana to knock a couple more states off the list. I was looking at flights yesterday and Idaho Falls kept coming up (Jackson wasn't showing any flights in late June yet). Any of you guys been there? Is it worth flying into there, visiting some, renting a car and heading through the Tetons into Jackson?
Driggs and Victor aren't too far from there, I assumed we would visit there as well on the way to Jackson.
Montana is on the list because I think my wife believes she can find someone from the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch to occupy her time while I watch the kids or something.
Anyways, I always wanted to visit Boise, but that seems like too much driving to make it happen this time around. Shiiiittt, Greenr wants to move to Boise, but it aint happening.
Thanks for the advice, guise.

I've only driven through Idaho Falls but it's <2 hours or so from Jackson and Yellowstone. I don't remember anything special about Idaho Falls. I recall the drive from Idaho Falls to Jackson as being scenic. US 93 from Challis to Missoula is what I'm most familiar with as I worked a summer for the Forest Service on the Salmon River near North Fork. But that was a long time ago (late 80's).

appealing from a getting into nature standpoint, but that is far AF away from where we will be.
Jackson is incredible so I assume most of that other stuff in that area is as well. I think Idaho Falls is just too far out of the mountains to be a place to stay, maybe just a place to fly into.
You worked for the Forest Service? If that paid anything, it would be my dream job. OR maybe I need to reprioritize my life and just take a more fun job that pays less.

47 miles from the nearest town (which was a post office, store, and 2 bars). Didn't have to do anything except check white water permits (4 private and 4 commercial permits a day) and supervise the campground a bit (clean outhouses). Mostly I drank beer and hung out by the Salmon River. It was glorious.

I haven’t been to Idaho Falls. Been to Coeur D’Aline though. All due respect to Clemson, THAT is God’s Country. That drive from Spokane through Idaho and Montana was breathtaking. Piddled a bit around the lake in CdA, gorgeous little town.

Mrs. Fordt loves the area, but says its apparently a lot more violent now than how she remembers it, based on Yellowstone.
She wants to see this, so planning ahead is smart. Get in line early.
"Chief Joseph Ranch near Darby, Montana, home to the Dutton family in the series, is ordinarily open to the public for accommodation, but due to the popularity of the show, the ranch is booked out for months in advance."

I've got family in Jackson and was recently there. The reason flights aren't shown in Jackson next June is because the runway in Jackson is set to undergo a significant construction project beginning in mid April and hopefully ending in late June. The airport will be shut down completely during the project.
There is not much to see in Idaho Falls. I would recommend going either later next summer and flying into Jackson when the airport is back on line or flying into Bozeman, MT.
Bozeman has a cool Main Street and easy access to some nice drives, hikes and is about 4 hours from Jackson. You're not far from Big Sky or Yellowstone via the North gate or West gate.
You can PM me and I can help more.

Jackson a few years ago and I love that place. Great info on the airport runway replacement. Thanks for the heads-up. Bozeman is on the list of places to visit, so starting there might be the ticket, then hit Yellowstone from the North.

The Beartooth Pass is one of the best scenic drives anywhere

From the Northeast Entrance through Cooke City to Red Lodge. Of course it's a rarely used entrance because it takes you nowhere and you're best to just turn around and head back to Yellowstone. The Cooke City area is really nice.
Also worked a summer in Yellowstone.

Yep. 100% agree the Beartooth Highway is awesome. You could either head that way out of Bozeman and make a long loop and back into Bozeman--makes for a long but enjoyable day or better yet, make it relaxing and get to Red Lodge MT in time to check out this small town, spend the night there and then do the Beartooth Highway drive.
I think that drive rivals the Going to the Sun Road in Glacier.

If you are looking for some spectacular scenery on the way into Yellowstone might check out Cody Wyoming and the Chief Joseph Scenic Highway that goes into North Yellowstone. Dead Indian pass was awesome for the view. Cody was a neat town for a day or two.
Beartooth Pass is off of Chief Joseph Highway. Didn't make it far up that road since it was closed at night for repairs and I needed a camp spot before dark. Found a nice spot on Muddy Creek, a tributary of Clark's Fork. One of the best spots of my five weeks out there as there was a nice little trout stream with lots of hungry cutthroat.

driving and we drove ALOT in Colorado this summer so maybe not recreating that. We were originally just going to fly into JAC and go from there but that may not be possible with the construction unless we wait until July.
If the SLC ticket price is right though (for 5 people) I might be able to do that. 5 Hour drive to Jackson.

Fly into the beautiful, run down mining town of Casper Wyoming, and spend a night mingling with the unemployed locals at the Keg and Cork.
The next day, take a hungover, 5 hour drive through such metropolises like HeII's half acre (pop. 8). Manderson (pop 104) Crowheart (pop 41), and hope you don't need any gas west of Dubois. The rusting hulks of old oil field derricks are interesting to look at, as is the occasional Coyote. The bonus is that past about Moneta the cops will pull you only if you are doing above about 95-100 mph.
A Tesla is NOT a good idea here.
