our D is holding us back

I know we score a crap ton and that wins games but that is the way the game is played now as opposed to years past where D was king.
This years and last years might have great records but overall our teams are not complete by no means.
Bama has complete teams, we have a very good offense with a crappy at best D. And that is what in my eyes makes this team very good but not our best since 1981.

I think that was true about last years team but I think this years team will surprise you on D. The DL is improving and very very deep. The LBs are the best they have been in years. The only question is the DBs. I think the freshman will have an impact but the DL will make them look a lot better with the pressure they provide.
No one ever has a truly complete team. Bama's offense left a lot to be desired this season. If they were up against a spread team who could put points on the board it would be a very difficult game for them, just like A&M.

only thin at secondary, but with 8 freshman dbs coming in, I think they will provide the depth. Blanks and Robert Smith are looking good at safety (very good by my eyes), "we won with the cornerbacks we have now", but what 3(?) were injured last year and now they are back. Linebackers are awesome, however, I believe that Shuey slides back to middle, because of his leadership qualities. The line is also awesome! If the defense is as good as I think it is, there will be not stopping our TIGERS!

has been the worst I have ever seen in Death Valley in my entire life. But, I dont know how much improvement we can honestly expect out of them. Same players, same scheme. Hopefully Reed can wring some improvement from the secondary.
with how potent our offense should be. Even if our defense was only 25-30th in the nation, we'd be almost unstoppable.

Veneables was new last year. The players seem to have a grasp on the scheme this year, and I think Reed is a better teacher than the coach who went to Auburn. GO TIGERS!

Some of the late '80s teams were really good

Many people said a Danny Ford-lead 1990 Clemson team would've been a serious national title contender.

Maybe the 1990 team, with Danny Ford coaching would have

had greater success, but in all honesty, Danny Ford coached Clemson's gretest team ever and did not win it all with them.
The 1989 team was the most talented ever. Danny let that team screw around and get beat by Duke and while Duke was a good team then, they had no business beating Clemson. They played that game so uninspired. Still mkaes me sick to this day. Same thing with a very average GT team, lost one they should have cruised through.
The 1989 Clemson team was the best talent assembled ever at Clemson and should have been in the MNC.

I would give the edge to the 90 team, talent wise

No doubt the 89 team was loaded, but it was also pretty young and not as dynamic on offense as the 90 team was. Hard to compare the two by performance because Hatfield was coaching in 90 and that team won a lot of games by 7 it should have won by 30. However, in terms of talent, that team was absolutely nasty on defense and was a better collection of offense overall. Cameron was more explosive as a player than Morocco. Ronald Williams as a freshman was very good as well. Remember that Terry Allen was injured during the 89 season and didn't play past the Dook game. Doug Thomas was also a speed burner on that 90 team.
90 had nearly the same defense just a year older than the 89 squad. The veteran nature was why you didn't see the eggs we saw at Dook and especially at home vs. GT in 89. Youth had a lot to do with that.
The 88 team was pretty #### good too, but I strongly feel the 90 team would have won it all with Danny coaching.

Agreed!! The 1989 team was the best combined talent (especially on defense) that I've ever seen at Clemson. What, 6 or 7 starters were stars in the NFL? I guess they beat 2012 team by 2 or 3 TD's. I saw them destroy one of Bobby Bowden's best teams at FSU.
