Apparently, what separates a good campus from a bad one, is the amount of bars. Maybe the Clemson BOT should get on that (sarcasm)

Btw, Pittsburgh is a ########. I go there every year for a conference. Stay at the William Penn, which is nice, but the city itself is a ###### place. Traffic is bad for a big city, every one and their brother smokes, so the city is filled with smokey air, and cigarette butts, homeless on every corner. To compare, I lived in Baltimore for 5 years, and Baltimore is much better than Pittsburgh, so there you go.

+ 1. No way I can be okay with Pittsburgh being representative of "all Yankees". The entire city is a like factory filled with miserable drunkards and goons. Please, no one likes it there, not even the ones born & raised there. Pittsburgh is closer to Ohio, Kentucky & West Virginia than it is New York or Massachusetts. I'm trying real hard not to resent the OP's statement about "Yankees migrating to Clemson" as well as an earlier post I read about people in New York not saying hi. Lol. Come on guys. We aren't all bad and NYC is pretty darn magical actually. Don't put us all under one roof. New Yorkers hate Pittsburgh fans too, in every sport! Syracuse was talking a lot of crap too when they first joined the ACC, I witnessed it first hand and up close. After 3-4 years of beating them up on the field, those fans changed their tunes real quick. We'll serve Pitt some of that sweet humble pie come Fall and order will be restored. Don't let ignorant people get you so worked up! Be easy like the Sunday morning it is.

I think he was generalizing about "all Yankees", so I wouldn't lose any sleep over the comment. There are some nice people from up north, and not "all Yankees" are bad. But, generalizations exist for a reason. We all knew that inviting northern schools into the ACC would result in a bit of culture clash. You're a Tiger, and that's all that matter around Clemson.

I know man, thanks though. I had to break down many of those stereotypes myself during my time at Clemson. Hopefully, I'd let enough lasting impressions to change a few minds into thinking we aren't all the same. Truthfully, northerners and southerners alike could stand to benefit and learn a lot from one another. I'll never ever forget my time at Clemson and the life lessons I learned while I was there. That being said, and trust me when I say this - Pittsburgh fans are "those guys". We call them "a$$holes".

You seem okay.. if you are a tiger you are good with me! I can assure you that the guys I work with who are from Philly/Pitt and 'Cuse.. are very much what you would expect from a Yankee. whats worse is these people have moved to our state... and they bring the whole trailer park family with them.

You are correct. Yankees aren't bad. It's the ### Yankees (one's that move down here and stay) that are the problem. They move south to escape all of the problems but then come down here and vote and act like they did back home. They are so stupid they can't figure out they are the problem - ### Yankees.

Lol. I'm leaving this thread to go for a jog. You guys are too much. The Clemson student body is comprised of students from 44 states, 40% of undergrads from Clemson are from out-of-state paying out-of-state tuitions and surprisingly, they aren't all "Yankees". The diversity at Clemson is one of the things that make it great... I'm hoping your post is you being facetious or sarcastic (pretty please say you don't actually think this way in 2016). I meet southern transplants in New York all the time and greet them with a smile and open arms. Your neighbors might just be a$$holes. And a$$holes come from all walks of life.

Everyone from Italian from Long Island to rural Maine. Great people and a good education in living with Yankees for future dealings with people from all over from a business aspect. Wouldn't take it back for anything.

Lol. To each his/her own. I won't try and sell you NYC, the city sells itself and has been seen as one of the greatest cities on earth since the beginning of time. Heck, I can almost guarantee that your ancestors came through the ports there at some point; in essence, we are all New Yorkers to some extent. I love New York State, always have, always will. People that have never traversed the state think it's all skyscrapers and taxi cabs, couldn't be further from the truth. Central / northern New York provides some of the most breathtaking scenery and landscapes you will find in the east coast. The Adirondack region itself is the largest publicly protected area in the contiguous United States (6 million acres!). For those of you that have never been to New York, or only to Manhattan, I urge you to visit the Adirondacks.
And depending on where you're from, "upstate New York" is defined much differently. People from Syracuse will tell you that's upstate (when it's really Central NY). But people ;from NYC think of anything more than 20 minutes north of midtown as "upstate".
And no matter how you cut it, the Native Americans still got the raw deal.

I was raised in the south and I think it's sort of funny how people in the same country ...the best on the planet , want to trash each other the way some 'Murricans do . I work exclusively in NYC and have met and become friends with some of the greatest people you could ever meet . Same experiences when working in Philly and Baltimore . Conversely, I know some folks in Charleston that were born and raised and they are horrid , narrow minded fools that really make you wonder if there was a gestational accident that gave them their particular mental malady . People on an individual basis ...that's how you should do it . This regional bias and north south east west crapola is just a childish fall-back for folks who truly try very little .

Agree with CUYankee. NYC is amazing! There are lots of NY, NJ, PA, etc... students at Clemson! The NYC Clemson Club are super fans. They have huge football "watch parties" for every game in Manhattan. Our Clemson family up North are awesome! Go Tigers!

H3ll yeh man, I've been to the Liberty NYC plenty of times in Midtown, on W. 35th between 5th & Ave of the Americas. It gets pretty wild for the games there. Coolest thing is before the games when Dabo Swinney delivers a customized message to everyone on all the screens in the bar, thanking all the fans from the "Clemson of the North". Pumps everyone up. Definitely a good group of alumnus.

Ignorant, perhaps ... but not trashing
Jan 31, 2016, 10:53 AM
|

It's the typical "there's nothing to do" mindset that big-city folks have when faced with having to actually interact with life rather than having to have it ladled to them on a platter. And they're right ... big cities have more distractions.
More, but not better. And it leads to the mistaken notion that because it's different, it's not as good.
That's why Clemson is like no other place. Why, as Dabo says, it sells itself.
And why folks have to have experience it to appreciate it.

A good friend of mine and his dad are Pitt alums and have been big donors for years. His dad (who still lives in Pittsburgh) is golfing buddies with Clements' dad, so he has been down several times for sporting events, etc. he went to the Clemson-Pitt game wearing orange, and ran into the Pitt coach after the game, causing the coach to do a double take.
He told me that we treat him better than Pitt does, and that if Pitt doesn't step up their game, those big checks will start coming to Clemson soon.

I think you are being overly sensitive...a few negative comments but a lot of positive about Greenville and the game day atmosphere especially. The reality is that Clemson is in the middle of nowhere if you come from a larger metropolitan area. In no way did I get the overall impression they were 'trashing' our school.

Geez people. I know some of you still fight the fight, but Clemson is awesome and Pittsburgh is awesome.
Pittsburgh was a rundown factory town...20 years ago. Now it's a medical/art/science center. Unlike Buffalo, Cleveland, Detroit, etc, Pittsburgh has started to thrive in the post industrial era. The decline of the steel industry hurt the city, and the people who remained have been resilient enough to thrive doing something else. I personally think Pittsburgh is beautiful with all its bridges, mountains, and rivers. Hate away if you will, but you'll sound as ignorant as those who trash Clemson.

I agree, my wife's sisters husband is from Pitt and we have gone up there a few times. Had a blast and everything we did was fun and everywhere was nice.

I'm from PA, about three hours from steel town and believe me there are plenty of rural areas outside of the 'burg. My town resembles the rural upstate. Pitt fans have an NFL stadium they barely half fill and the fan base isn't passionate about their sports UNLESS they are winning. This PA Tiger plans on being in the Valley next fall to see our Tigers take care of the Panthers. And for those Pitt fans who are making the trip, there are plenty of things to do and see in the Upstate, especially in downtown Greenville.

saying we don't have atmosphere. I've been to Pittsburgh many times and while it is nicer than it once was it is still an old rustbelt pro sports town. They play in the Steelers stadium and rarely draw more than 50k to home games. BTW, we didn't want those Yankee schools in the ACC anyway, thanks Swoffie.

..dumb #### about Clemson.
He then went on and said Atlanta is better than Gvl (there is no measurement other than size that Atlanta wins v Greenville) and also hates the Atlanta airport (this world traveler appears to have been there once and has made this massive decision he feels qualified on).
Have a beer, who cares.

You must not know a lot of Yankees, or at least ones outside of the ones you've encountered in Times Square on your last touristy trip down Broadway. All the top 25 skiing resorts east of the Rockies are up here brother... You've got Snowshoe in WV and it pales in comparison to what we've got up here.
Virginia has the Cumberlands, Tennessee has the Blue Ridge, but we have the Alleghenies in PA, the Adirondacks & the Catskills in NY, the Green in VT & the White Mountains in NH.
Have you ever hiked any of the high peaks? Seen Niagara Falls? Watkins Glen? The Hudson River? Long Island? Providence? Nantucket? All of Maine, New Hampshire? The St. Lawrence River? Lake Placid? For that matter, any of the Great Lakes? Leave the Yankee rhetoric alone man. This thread is going on 13 hours and your ideas are going on 250 years. I've met my fair share of ignorant southerners too brother, and right now you're sounding just like one.

Absolutely. Sometimes I don't know why I react to this stuff lol. I just wish more people would come up and traverse the north as a whole instead of lumping us altogether as rude, selfish a$$holes.

It's not like there are a lot of bars, and the bars we have aren't particularly nice. But it's a great place to go to school, and it's a great place to attend a game or spend a weekend.

I am a native born southerner(Greenwood 1950) and about half my best friends are either from upstate NY or Penn. Great people and most of the Penn. friends are from near Pitt. My boss is from there and she is a fantastic manager and person. She calls herself "an adopted daughter of the south". The only time I hitchhiked home from Clemson in 1968 was with a friend on D-6 Johnstone who was from Jersey. A great guy! Now to clear a few things up, Lake Hartwell is man-made, so artificial makes some sense as opposed to a lake created by glaciers and Tennessee has no contact with the Blue Ridge Mountains. Just sayin....

Agree with you on all points except the last.
Technically:
"Divided into Northern and Southern sections by the Roanoke River gap, the Blue Ridge traverses 8 states: Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Tennessee, North Carolina and Georgia, with the longest portion slicing a great crescent through all of western Virginia."
And you seriously hitchhiked home from Clemson once? Haha. That's amazing (and today terrifying).

CUYANKEE, I am 65 years old and have learned something today....The Smokey Mountains are a part of the Blue Ridge mountains as are the Roans and Balsams. I always thought the Blue Ridge was the leading eastern edge of the Appalachians from Georgia to northern Virginia. Therefore Tennessee does touch the Blue Ridge. Yes we did hitch hike to Greenwood in 1968. In those days it was considered a rite of passage to do this. Back then there were signs on the road beside the president's office that had destinations like Greenville and Anderson and people would pick you up if they had room and were headed in that direction. We had our rat hats on and got in the Anderson sign area and made it to Anderson fine. Getting across town was harder. It took us 3 different rides to get us to Greenwood, SC and about 4 hours. Driving straight would have been about 1.5 hours. It was not scary, but we did have to walk a good bit especially in the town of Anderson....

That's awesome sir! See, we both learn from one another, regardless of our age or where we're from. I still think you're all crazy for hitchhiking but I'd love to crack open a few and hear some of the stories. Have a nice day

Well said. We've all got our preferences. When I was in college, I loved Clemson. I couldn't have asked for a better place to be....but nowadays I've grown accustomed to/fallen in love with the city life. I wouldn't be able to go back to Clemson beyond a weekend. Others share my feelings, but others feel that way about cities. There's no right answer here.

What a bunch of drama queens. There is nothing in there that isnt true. Clemson is hotels and fast food restaurants. If I were coming in for a long weekend from Pitt I would stay in Greeneville or Charlotte. They said the actual game day experience at Death Valley is second to none. Can't find one thing stated that is ridiculously off target. It may not be what you want to hear but it is reality.
