Article on Spurrier in KC Star

Interesting article on how Spurrier "changed the SEC" when he came to Florida in 1990. Says he has a photographic memory, among other claims. Apparently his "fun and gun" offense forced the SEC defenses "out of the dark ages" and gave rise to the zone D's to stop him by the late '90's. Is this BS, or is there some truth to it? I know what he did at Duke. I was there when Duke beat Danny's best team in 1989.

When Spurrier was at Duke....

his innovative "fun and gun" offense gave alot of defenses fits. Most of the other teams around the country were still running an option type offense and that is what most defenses were designed to stop.
Once he got to Florida, and established his program, his success was based largely on having the benefit of more talent at every position than almost everyone else he played.

when you don't have the benefit of superior talent at literally every position.

His fun and gun didn't do much with Tom Osbourne and Nebraska.

I happened to be in DC when sos went there. I told them in two years they would be happy to see him go. Glad I was there when I could say "I told you so". When it gets tough the tough gets get going and vice versa. sos always bails when it gets tough. AMF

Good analysis, that's why when he didn't win at SC right away he took the Alabama job... oh wait.
And for the guy saying he only won at Florida because he had better players, UF had never won a SEC championship before he got there, so he must have had something to do with it.

Spurrier is an excellent coach.
He won the freakin' Heisman Trophy at Florida, when Florida was a joke of a program. He's has been a winner everywhere he's coached in college, with an ACC title at Duke and an SEC title game appearance at SC. That's the equivalent of walking on water, for crying out loud. At Flordia, he won five sec titles and one national championship title. He's got the highest winning percentage at SC of anyone who coached much. And he currently owns us.
Geez. I don't like Spurrier. But suggesting Spurrier is anything less than a great coach is pretty silly.

He was the third best coach in FL while he was there; never beat FSU in Tallahaasee; and won the NC in a do over. SEC West was awful . Kind of like the East is now
