Purnell took Clemson further in the NIT than Brownell ever has. (NIT Final vs NIT Semi)
Purnell took Clemson further in the ACC Tournament than Brownell ever has. (ACC Final vs ACC Quarters)
Brownell has never taken a Clemson team further in the NCAA Tournament than Purnell did (Round of 64 vs Round of 64)

We actually won a game in the NCAA tournament under Brownell.
That said, the 6 years after that have not been successful.

Purnell left in the middle of the night without the guts to even tell the young men he recruited to their face he was leaving.
They found out from the media...
Purnell had Plateaued while at Clemson he left in a bad way. I hope he never steps foot on our campus again. He is no Clemson man.

I don't like the way he left. That doesn't diminish what he did at Clemson.

Link to me saying it did. I am not just going to get on here and praise him like some are.
The way he left was cowardly period end of story.
The program had stagnated under him he saw it we all saw it.

3 straight "solid" years in the NCAAT ( 5, 7, 7 seeds)
ACCTCG appearance..
since when is that "stagnated"?.... especially by Clemson bball standards?

As I said in another thread...
Still doesnt change where we finished those 3 years 3rd 5th and 5th...
Other teams being up and down doenst change our standings.

just b/c people are calling for change now, doesn't mean he'll make it.... He could be waiting until we're done, which is likely the case...
He is likely still coaching for his job. A loss in the 1st or 2nd round of the NIT and we may still see a move. Final Four weekend is when a lot of "hires" take place.

sure, he may have left in a manner not becoming of what we would expect... I'll give you that. I wish he would have handled that better. I'll even give you that he may have slacked off in some recruiting at the end...
but that doesn't completely destroy what he built his final 3 years and what BB took over--
it WAS NOT a rebuild...
What do you think BB would have said if you told him, after his opening presser where he said this was not a rebuild, that 7 years later we'd have 1 NCAAT birth and 2 NITs-- do you think he would have given a "we're on solid ground" assessment?

That is 100% not a myth.
You are correct it was not a rebuild but you are also wrong if you dont think there were cracks in the foundation.
Also I said two years ago that it was NCAA T or bust for CBB this year. I want him gone so dont treat me as if I am wanting him back. His performance was not good enough. That doesnt change the facts about OPP though.

I didn't say that-- sure there may have been cracks
Mar 14, 2017, 12:07 PM

but you guys talk about it like the entire house fell down, and that doesn't make any sense...
We were still a program on arguably the best stretch in Clemson bball history... Cracks or no cracks, you don't walk into that and look back 7 years later at only 1 NCAAT berth...
I like BB, but the idea of still even mentioning Purnell, facilities, players leaving, etc.. is just laughable

the biggest issue in the whole fire/retain BB deal is
Mar 14, 2017, 11:59 AM
|
|
the fact that he inherited a team that was solidly in the NCAAT 3 years straight, made an ACCTCG appearance, and won more ACC games in those 3 years than any team not Duke or UNC...
It doesn't matter how you spin recruiting/ OP's departure--- that's taking over a winning program, NOT A REBUILDING JOB.
BB even said in his opening presser this WAS NOT A REBUILD.
BB just said the program was on solid footing, but I would encourage a reporter to ask him this...
"If someone had told you, after you first took this job, that 7 years later you would have 1 NCAAT birth, zero in the last 6 years, and only 2 NITs... how would you have evaluated the program?"
This is underscored by the fact that BB has had an easier SOS than both Purnell or Barnes over the course of careers.
I like BB, and I think he loves Clemson-- but at the end of the day, there's just no way to spin the fact that we have taken steps backwards.

If I recall correctly OP left our program on his on accord. He probably realized what was coming and didn't wish to hear all the bull that is spread on this forum. If some of you were as smart as you think you are you would be able to coach BB. BB has been as successful as the last few coaches we have had. Get off your high horse

under the leadership of the current head coach, Brad Brownell did win one NCAA Tournament game (albeit with OP's players), something OP was never able to accomplish.
