My most memorable Clemson -USC game

Nov 24, 2014, 9:10 AM

was 1977 at Willie B. The Tigers built a big lead in the first half only to gradually lose the momentum and the lead in the second half. Then in the last couple of minutes Fuller threw a high pass to Jerry Butler who leapt about 40" off the ground and laid out to make the catch on the goal line for a td and a Tiger win .

It was my sophomore year at Clemson and was sitting in the opposite end zone from the catch.

First dead silence, then us 10,000 Clemson faithful exploded. Next stop Gator Bowl.

I was there too. If you remember, Charley Pell gave out cigars to the team after each win. Carolina had " no cigars today" shirts printed and were wearing them under their jerseys. When they went ahead, before "the catch" they were walking up and down the sidelines showing off their t-shirts thinking they had the game won....HAHAHAHAHA! I still get goosebumps listening to Jim Phillips' call of that play!
