No message at all since most bowls are played in front of empty stadiums and nobody should care.

I think that's a combination of a few things.
One, going to a bowl game is easier now with the greater number of them (and I am NOT complaining about that at all) and the added (typically cupcake) game.
And two, there were long stretches of Clemson history where bowls and bowl eligibility were not nearly as common as they are now.
But to be clear, going to a bowl game means precisely as much now as it did then. Nothing. Just fun exhibition games intended to entertain us through the holidays.

Quite few of our commits and targets have been on twitter posting about the bowl game, excited we're playing Oklahoma..even though Ok is unranked, the guys still see it as a major program and great opportunity (Tucker I. tweeted he's glad we're playing in Orlando/his backyard so he can go to the game). So yea, our commits and recruits are watching...

Very true -- we have quite a few freshman players from Florida like Mackenzie and Tay and playing in Orlando at this bowl may give some of their family members and friends a chance to see these guys play in person as CU Tigers for the first time, since it's in-state/closer to home. Tay's from the Tampa area which is only ~60 miles from Orlando....
