Yannity did an admirable job replacing an icon, Jim Phillips

May 2, 2014, 9:00 PM

Although "and there's orange in the end zone" never hit home with me personally, I can see how it may have with many younger Tiger fans. I am so glad. Pete deserves a following for the 11 years he performed the task following the iconic Jim Phillips. Pete is a hard working, dedicated, consummate pro. He represented Clemson University with an unwavering character and polished exterior and should be remembered for that.

Thanks, Pete!

After reading so many negative comments on this board regarding his replacement, Don Munson, I am going to defend this decision. Don will be a great replacement for Yannity. There is not a harder working man in the broadcast industry. There is not a man with equal character. There is not a soul more deserving or more dedicated to his job that I could name. Don is not a phony. What you see is what he is. I worked with him for 16 years. He comes prepared and energetic, regardless if he'd driven 4 hours from C'ton that night before after doing PBP for women's bball leaving at 2AM to arrive at 8AM to do the Tiger Tailgate Show. Never complaining.

Some have mentioned why not a "national search for such a high profile position?" I say, why bother?

What MADE Jim Phillips, Bob Fulton, Larry Munson and others such icons was the era in which they broadcast. Then, teams were extremely lucky to be on TV twice a year. Fans depended on those radio broadcasts to hear the games. The listening audiences were HUGE compared to today when almost every major college team is broadcast on TV every week. And if not TV, the internet. The sound of their voices was the comfort food to the ears and hearts of thousands of dedicated fans that were lucky enough to be in range of the signal. In truth, the VOICE, in those days, WAS the team.

Today, not so much. But if it WERE still true today, I'd wager that both Pete, and now Don, would eventually have become the same ear candy comfort to the new generations of Tiger fans.

So let's thank Pete and get behind Don and trust in the decisions and decision makers that have kept all of us proud to be Tiger fans for generations and hopefully, for generations yet to come.

That's all I got…GOOOOOOOOOOOO TIGERS!!!!!!!!!!!

None of us fans had a vote in the hiring of

May 2, 2014, 9:12 PM

any of the broadcasters prior to Munson just the same as we had no say in this hiring.

Phillips and Yannity both did pretty good. I think the folks doing the hiring did a credible job hiring them....hopefully they've done just as good a job with Mr. Munson's hire. We all need to give him a chance to succeed just as we gave all the previous ones.....although I certainly don't remember much of an uproar after Bill Goodrich left....:~)

Thanks. Much needed perspective

May 2, 2014, 11:00 PM

As a former DJ and quite a Cunning Linguist.
I liked Pete's delivery and Pipes.

I will give Munson an open door to present his style. I love radio announcers with TV on.

As a Tiger in CootTown it pains me to hear their qb announcer. Personal opinion one of the best announcers in our state got shafted by the Burnlounge fiasco. Mike Morgan is quality.

Go Don
Go Tigers

Just dropped in to see what my post precipitated...

And am delighted to find someone NOT flaming me. So, thanks for that, MoJo. Yes, perspective is what it is and many younger peeps cannot possible have it. They will, though…they will.

What did the snail say on the turtles back? ………
Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!

It's all a matter of perspective.

Thanks, Mrs. Munson!

Kidding. :) In all seriousness I liked Yanity, except for his tagline. Otherwise I thought he was a great announcer and certainly held his own in filling the shoes of a legend. I have no bias either way towards Munson; I hope he does a great job.

Munson is a bore. At least Yannity had a little excitement in his voice while calling a game.

Terrible way for Clemson to handle the situation with Pete. The things you said about Don could have been identical for Pete. He certainly is a professional and for Clemson and Dabo to talk family, this sure does not seem like how you treat family.

I agree with this.***

I don't see people questioning

May 4, 2014, 2:56 PM

that he's hard-working and has longevity and perseverance in the business. You're on the wrong horse here. This is similar to people defending TB because he was such a "good man". The question is not whether Munson is hard working, dedicated, and sees orange, but whether he's right for the job.
It's great you worked with him 16 years and you know he's such a fine man. I believe you. But this has nothing to do with if he's the best man to do play-by-play. My question is how are these guys screened for this particular job, and what "qualifies" them? How is this done? How did we do it, and decide on him?

I think maybe he could be the guy, if he can quit saying "Um, Um" every fifth word, but this is bad habit that's hard to break. A good announcer has to be fluid, call on the right phrase instantly, describe the action concisely without talking too much and getting in the way, have the right voice that doesn't bother people after a while, be balanced in giving due to players for the other side, a little bit of a homer, and so forth. He may have some of these things, but I don't know if he has all of them. We shall see. But whether he's a great guy and dedicated and in the system forever aren't really qualifications.

Agree to a degree.

May 4, 2014, 6:22 PM

Don is certainly not the best who's' ever been, and I'm fairly certain he would agree with that assessment. But, I've never heard him do FB PBP and until I do, I won't have an opinion. But one of my major points was that the radio PBP buy is SO much less of a big deal these days, it's not a maker or a breaker.

He deserves the chance, in my o, and I also believes there's more to this story than we've been told. However, regarding the way Pete's release was handled…that's the way Clemson does things. I got a pink slip after 16 years on the tailgate show with absolutely no acknowledgment, gold, silver or even aluminum watch or press release or t-shirt. It was OK with me and apparently with them, as well.

For the OP - I gave a TU.

For anyone complaining about Munson, well I just dunno - For me, I like to hear anything CLEMSON and if Don is the man saying it, then I'm listening. Just like I listened to JP all those years and loved it all. If they are talking about my TIGERS, then I'm liking it. I just don't get all the hoopla over who the hell is saying it.

The important point is that life just isn't always fair;

May 5, 2014, 5:29 AM

thus, regardless of how we feel about either man, a decision was made for whatever reasons to replace Pete with Don, and we'll just have to await the outcome.

The real problem with most of us older folks is our esteem for Jim Phillips. He came to Clemson, when I was a senior in 1968. His was the only radio voice I heard from then until his death over ten years ago. Pete had a difficult task following in Jim's path, yet did a good job.

Time will tell whether or not Don will fill Pete's shoes admirably. I'm willing to give him the chance.
