UGA alum and friends take on Richt

Close UGA friend posted this to his Facebook account yesterday. I thought it was a good take on the situation, comes down to whats more important to you, wins on the field or off the field. Granted UGA still has off field problems even with Richt at the helm.
My perspective on Coach Richt. I love my alma mater and I love watching college football on Saturday and I love cheering on the Dawgs, but I have to keep my thoughts and emotions in check at times. My first thought is that the University of Georgia's primary purpose is research and education. I believe Mark Richt strongly supports these goals. Second, I know Coach Richt was hired to coach football as his primary purpose; however, most of these kids will not ever play on Sunday, so supporting these kids in their academic pursuits is still a big part of his job - stay with me for a minute. He does this extraordinarily well. Again, coaching is his primary purpose and all coaches desire and coach their team in such a way as to win football games -and for him an SEC Championship and hopefully a national championship. He has won the SEC Championship - he has coached us to a 13-1 season - the Dawgs and Aaron Murray were 1 pass away in Atlanta from taking us to the national championship, which I think we would have defeated a weaker Notre Dame team. So, Coach Richt has been successful on the winning football games front. Secondarily, a coach's job is to mold young players through character development. Coach Richt has done this extraordinarily well also. Again, this is not the primary goal of winning football games for a coach, but it is a large part of his job. Again, most of these kids will not be professional athletes; however, they will be husbands, fathers, and servants of their communities. Here once more, coach Richt leads the team and sets a personal example of how to succeed as a servant in the community, as a father, and as a husband. I believe the players need this more than wins. So, I am going on record saying, I would rather be 10-3 every year and have coach Richt at the helm and have him continue to coach and lead his players than to win a national championship with another coach that lacks his strong character traits. That being said, I still believe we can win a national championship with Richt as the head coach. Lastly, I think America needs a dose of perspective when it comes to sports - the world for that matter. I know it is an outlier, but death threats on a punter who accidentally botches a kick is not ok, and this reveals a bigger underlying problem going on. The problem is, we have lost our perspective with sports. Not too many years ago, Andres Escobar, a Columbian soccer player, was murdered in the streets of his own country for accidentally kicking the soccer ball into his own goal. Again, this is an outlier, but it highlights the despicable thought that winning a sporting event is above character, education, and being a servant of our community. I love college football and I love being between the hedges and I anxiously await fall every year, but I am also determined to keep everything in its proper order of importance despite what my emotions on Saturday are telling me. Carry on Coach Richt.

If you feel that way, prepare to live with underachievement as long as he's there.

Typical sunshine pumping out of the UGA "Excuse Factory"

Seriously... They have Tommy Bowden syndrome over there. Richt may be a great man, but his inability to get it done on the field over the past 3 seasons is a huge dividing factor and his presence at the helm right now is distracting.
UGA needs a fresh start, but frankly, I hope they stick with him so they can continue to believe they are an Alabama caliber team in the preseason and feel the bitter sting of disappointment when Alabama comes to town and knocks them in the mouth. Or when its now been 4 weeks since they have scored an offensive touchdown and they continue to make excuses.
Where they always will say: "there's always next year" or "look at our recruiting." Please Richt, stay longer and deprive that fan base of any accomplishment for at least a couple more years.
