In Charleston the statue of Jc Calhoun is high and black charlestonians day his name “kill”houn

It’s high because the statue has been defaced and vandalized so much and his name is pronounced “kill” houn by a number of black charlestonians... I thought it was the “geetchee“ accent but my dad who is a licensed tour guide for the city, writer, lecturer and tour guide service owner and operator- let me know that it was NOT an accent but purposeful. These black Americans born out of the Charleston heritage as much as anyone else... MUST know and feel SOMETHING legitimately against JC Calhoun and his view. I grew up not knowing why myself until I got the history lesson. I am NOT sure how I feel about renaming Calhoun street to something else but I DO think there should be clear education and acceptance by all and his abhorrent views and statements on race and slavery monumented with his statues. Do you and are you willing to believe that what these black folks who grew up in the history and shadow of JC Calhoun have legitimate reasons for feeling the way they do and have a legitimate reason and history that makes them want things to change. If all you do is argue against them or try to take the edge off by- talking about black people being slave owners, and there were different laws, and they will come after everything and all of that - blah, blah, blah-you are saying that our and their past, present and continuing pain for all years since he was living may not be valid or worth listening to. Come on y’all!!! At least consider the argument and not feel this as an attack against white people and white contributions or trying to make White people feel guilty but about sharing and offering and giving dignity to others who have historically had it questioned. Let me go ahead and say it——“wrong bored moran!!! HBROWN- you’re a racist!!! Go away coot!!! Did I cover them all?!?!

but you are using divisive generalizations in your stance.
Slavery was immoral then, just as it is now. I think a lot of people are using the "slavery was legal then" argument as a means to justify any opposition or ease their own discomfort today.
When it comes to building names, statues, monuments, etc, my views have certainly changed as I have grown older. I think they all have their proper place. Confederate statues and monuments are fine in museums or places like Gettysburg National Park. But if citizens of a city, or students of a University are made to feel uncomfortable or threatened by them, then they need to go. If the black community in Charleston sees the Calhoun statue and they feel hatred or racism, then it should go. Same with Calhoun Honors College, Tillman Hall or STI.
Society evolves, the world changes, our views change. Just as the Confederate flag was removed from the SC Statehouse, these statues need to be removed and buildings renamed to be inclusive to all students and residents.
That's my opinion.

If there's merit in the notion of progress, someday abortion will be viewed the same way. Just because it's legal now doesn't make it moral. In the future, anyone (politician or otherwise) that had an abortion or supported abortion should have no statues or buildings named after them. The same abhorent disregard for human life should be disqualifying and any monuments erected should be torn down, regardless of any other achievements in their lives.

but you're making the assumption that one day abortion will be illegal, and that there will be people who feel threatened by buildings/monuments/statues of people who had an abortion or supported abortion. If that's the case, then we will cross that bridge when we get to it. But it shouldn't preclude us from doing what's right today. Of course, let me emphasize again that it is just my opinion that this is doing what's right.

That is a reasonable view. HOWEVER, what I have a problem with is the group think on the left. This entire situation (change the name, etc.) has nothing to do with the feelings of a few blacks who Googled .
This situation is made up to divide the USA and to try to remove Trump from office. It is fake - generated by social media hustlers. It's like typing C# code into a compiler and seeing the result. That's how easy it is to affect the predictable liberal masses.
Luckily for conservatives, it is happening now and not in September. Plenty of time for this to go away and have the next issue surface.
As individuals, 99.999% of ALL of us are good people. However, my patience and sympathy is very short for those that follow the liberal media and BS they spew.

I’m the head pastor 17 years of a multi ethnic church-this is my life’s work...

I am typically just a Clemson fan. These discussions are happening among my people and maybe I shouldn’t- but I assume others want to be challenged and discuss what are the pressing issues right now. Look at the boards- what is everyone talking about!!?? With my congregation being 60%white and 40% black- with believers coming from the left and right I’ve heard and have wrestled with almost every argument here. Maybe I’m starting way ahead of this convo. I would consider our denomination conservative- predominately conservative. But our church is diverse. Just enjoy putting different viewpoints out there. Sorry to make you wrestle in such a way that you see me as race baiting. Let me look back at my posts and see if I have screwed up and have been overbearing. But when football season starts I will be equally intense there too!!

I have known @HBrown for nearly 30 years from back when he was a Clemson student to today. He is not racist nor is he race fixated nor has he been in the time I have known him. The anger aimed at him for raising reasonable questions - now that has been palpable.

Why is nothing ever said about black on black murder. Why, when a cop is involved, only then, all hell breaks loose. Look at Chicago, philly, NY, and many other big cities EVERY weekend. Do blacks look the other way, simply because they don’t want to bring up the fact, that they could be to blame for something? Why do blacks think it’s ok to go steal a Tv because one of theirs that they knew nothing about, was killed? Where is the justification? Did you see white people rioting when Nicole and Rob Goldman were killed? It’s time to step up, and take some responsibility. This being said, George Floyd DID NOT deserve to die like he did, and I hope the cops are held accountable. But come on people. Be adults.

Exactly. 18 murders in 24 hours in Chicago on May 31. Black mayor, black chief of police, black county attorney.
Solving the enormous problem of blacks killing blacks does not get democrats elected - this is why "no one" cares.
On the flip side, the reason all this is hyped up is because it DOES get democrats elected.

Also, you are much better educated about the Calhoun statue in Charleston that I was. I lived and worked in that area for five years, and cannot even clearly recall seeing it. Anyone who doesn't want to be immersed in Confederate history better avoid Charleston altogether, they are ate up with it. The snobbery of "Old" Charleston families is legendary. They refer to families that have only lived there for a hundred years as "newcomers". The inside joke is that the word SNOB was derived from Slightly North of Broad (Street).
