Texans really want to trade out of 1st pick.

Makes a lot of sense since Clowney does not fit into their scheme.

Not really. As Herm Edwards said: If your scheme

isn't right for great players, you need to find a new scheme.

Their big thing is they want a QB and another great player for the #1 pick. We'll see if someone accomdates them.

Re: Panthers should trade up and Take Sammy!!!

May 8, 2014, 10:50 AM

Really, There's not another WR close and they have none with any speed. He's a game changer, they can still fill holes in Sec and OT without having to do it early. This would be a great opportunity. Player like Sammy is a once in a generation type difference maker.

Wouldn't it be pretty abnormal to trade up that

May 8, 2014, 10:52 AM

many spots? It would probably be extremely costly. That would be a jump of 20-25 spots in the 1st round.

it just doesn't feel right to agree with The Prodigal but I

May 8, 2014, 11:52 AM

do.....the Panthers just aren't going to that even if they should! They have doen a pretty good job recently in the draft so I expect them to continue to make good picks. They have concentrated on defense so I expect them to go offense this year.

I wouldn't be surprised if they went defense again this draft. Looks like around 8 WRs could be selected before their pick and I'm not excited about the OL they would probably take at 28. I'm hoping they trade out of the 2nd.

Never understood that problem: if they have first pick, then

May 8, 2014, 11:01 AM [ in reply to Not really. As Herm Edwards said: If your scheme ]

they can pick whoever they want? *l*

and trade later.

May 8, 2014, 11:19 AM

It is no different than any other exchange. You try to make the best deal you can. Getting a 2 fer 1 is a deal.
They are hoping some one out there values the #1 pick more than they do.

That's the problem

GMs can't pick whoever they want. Especially at #1.

If they decide to pick someone other than Clowney at #1 and that player is a bust...that GM is getting axed.

Since Clowney is the consensus #1 pick this year and if he's a bust, it's not the GMs fault and less heat on the management for making that pick.

GMs always want to make the safest pick that won't cost them their job.

The catch there is, they already have a player who's proven to be the top defender in the NFL. Changing your scheme to one that suits Clowney takes away what Watt does best as a 4-5 technique penetrating, disruptive force. Watt is the best in the NFL mainly because if his unique role - if you take that away, he becomes less effective. Don't know why you'd give up a dominant player's role for someone who MIGHT turn out to be dominant.

It makes more sense to trade the pick here IMO.

Or take Clowney and fit him into your scheme.***

With a .422 winning percentage

as a head coach I'm not sure a Herm Edwards coaching philosophy would be one I would put much faith in.

I still think they trade down and take a QB (Bortles or Johnnie Football - at least one of these will be available for them later).

I have a feeling the Browns will trade up to get the first pick. They have two picks in the first round and can spare one since they will also have another top pick next year since they suck. I still do not think DoDo will be the first pick.

You sure about that?

@AdamSchefter: Houston is now locked in on its player and is not expecting a trade, per sources. Texans happy to sit at 1 and take player it wants.

Relax coot

May 8, 2014, 3:37 PM

Clowney is still going to be the #1 pick.
