Funny thing about Tommy Bowden
Dec 1, 2016, 10:12 PM

Bowden got Dabo back into coaching and then recommended him as interim coach. He saw something in Dabo that a lot of folks did not. I was ready for Bowden to move along in 2008 as I thought he had taken us as far as he could. But when you talk about standing on the shoulders of those who came before we owe TB, at the very least, a tip of the cap. No Bowden = No Swinney.

Bowden did his best in my opinion, just didn't quite have the horses (Tigers) to pull it off. Dabo, it turns out was a great hire and one Bowden has to get some credit for.
Go Tigers!!!

For seeing the potential in Coach Swinney. BOT also bought into Dabo's vision for what Clemson football could be.

Remember all the Tnet writing heads who opined we hired DS

because we could get him cheaply? They were disgusted by the non-splashy, low-dollar hire, convinced we were not committed to winning. Somebody research that and see who hasn't gone back and scrubbed their posts clean.

Then we need to thank Bobby Bowden or Rich Rod

If he was not the son of a living legend, Tommy may not have gotten the breaks that he did. Also, if Rich Rod had not been a heck of an OC, Tommy may still be coaching in the Sun Belt because he was never offer the Clemson job from Tulane.

Rich Rod is garbage

He's a walking dumpster fire. Anybody who tries to screw his alma mater over money by lying doesn't deserve a job anywhere. Tommy needed Rich Rod as an assistant. But nobody needs him as a head coach.

Dabo would probably be anxious to hang up so he can get back on the recruiting trail for Clemson.

I've always said that. Bowden inherited a team

that was just a mess. He brought it back to competitive.
Ran the program the right way. Never had a losing season after inheriting a 3-8 team. Owned the Gamecocks. Significantly improved facilities. Broke the anoles stranglehold on us. Brought us Dabo.
Far from perfect but you have to acknowledge his contributions.

Simply put, Tommy and Dabo are opposites: Tommy Bowden = pessimist - never could see the true potential in Clemson Dabo Swinney = optimist - always saw the true potential in Clemson
Tommy Bowden did some good things for Clemson. He started the ball rolling on all the facility upgrades and did bring us out of the dismal Tommy West years. In hind site, I find that Bowden's biggest problem was his lack of belief in Clemson's potential. Bowden never saw Clemson as a school that could get top recruits/talent across the board to compete with the blue bloods. Because of his lack of belief, Bowden built finesse teams around a few really talented players in the hope of stringing together enough wins to maybe have a championship season once in a blue moon.
I've heard Dabo say that he was told to not bother recruiting CJ Spiller (5 star recruit at the time) because he was out of our league. I believe that epitomize's Bowden's attitude towards Clemson and the reason he never won any championships. Bowden was a moral man that ran a clean program, but he never really believed that Clemson could be among the best in college football and it mired us in being average for 10 years.
Credit to Bowden for hiring Dabo - someone who not only had a vision, a detailed plan, but most of all a belief in the potential of Clemson. Amazing what Dabo has accomplished - but not surprising when you learn about how Dabo has fought and overcome so many obstacles in his life.
