Best in recent history, for sure

There are some old-timers that could challenge him for best All-Time, like Banks McFadden, for example. But in recent history, in terms of all-around performance, and measured by APY, I'd have to say YES pretty easily.
He's a definite game-changer and a major asset to the team in ways other than his on-field performance as well.

my years (47) as a clemson fan. I do not remember any one player that we have rode the back of week after week for a win. In the stands and at home, we are continuous screaming for CJ to get the ball. Even tho we all have known he has been dealing with that injured toe. We still want CJ to have the ball. As a one player game changer, yes i believe CJ is the tops on that list. We have had some greats but, none that could put points on the board as quick as CJ. Game after game after game after game. How could he not be voted the best.

Terry Allen was THE BEST running back I've seen at Clemson..

in the 35 years I've been watching intently. It is not even close. Allen was amazing and his NFL career bears the proof of that point. CJ is the most dynamic all around offensive weapon Clemson has had in that same time frame. Ain't even close.
BTW...I was exceedingly disappointed at the lack of applause Tiger fans gave Terry Allen when he was introduced at the TCU game ... shame! I stood up and started screaming at the top of my lungs...a few around me stood up when they saw me acting a fool. It was like most fans did not know who he even was. I was thinking OMG we've lost all tradition. The yards after contact that kid used to generate and he was not even that big. BTW...Ellington reminds me just a tad of Terry Allen ..big shoes.

Agree to disagree...Allen shared the backfield with great

RB's too. It was very dissappointing Allen did not come back. He was a better pure every down RB than CJ. He was not as good of a receiver or return specialist as CJ. Allen was more of a Mark Ingram type of RB -- the type that will excel in the NFL. CJ is awesome and I agree the most versatile offensive threat we've had at Clemson, but not the best RB. CJ didn't really learn to run north-south instead of east/west (opposite in DV) from the backfield until sometime last season. Terry Allen came to Clemson as a true frosh breaking tackles left and right and taking the rock north and south down the field.
CJ will not be an every down back in the NFL. He'll be a specialist - returns and a back on possible passing situations. I hope he will be a 10+ year NFL veteran and a 4(? I think) time pro bowler like Allen, but not many accomplish that. I love 'em both. My comments aren't in any way intended to slight CJ. A blind man could tell he is amazing. I believe he is the best offensive player we've had at CU, just not the best true RB.

I agree completely. Allen had great vision and amazing balance. It would look like he was going down and he would put a hand down or something and keep chugging right through the attempted tackle. Even with all of the knee problems he had an outstanding NFL career too.
I do feel bad for CJ that aside from the first half of his freshman year he's never had a very good offensive line ahead of him.

I think his turf toe is bothering him more than he lets on,

I havent really seen the eye popping run where he makes 2 or 3 ankle breaking cuts this year. He's had some good runs where he uses his speed to out run everybody. But turf toe doesnt really affect that, its the cutting ability thats hurt.
Just think what he could do if healthy!

I'm glad we got some clarification. I was concerned when he would slow down early and go out of bounds. It seems odd that he would do that with just turf toe. But, I could be wrong. I have never experienced that injury.

I would debate turf toe not hurting speed.

Anything that causes the toe to bend hurts and it gets worse as the games goes on. Just starting out of the backfield would be unpleasant but I understand what you're saying. CJ got caught by a DB on one of his runs that I think might not have happened to a healthy CJ. Awesome kid isn't he?

He is an awesome kid...always want to talk team first. Getting him to open up about himself or the injury isn't easy. And what I didn't write in the article was that every other sentence he would say "but I'll be ready to go Saturday."
