Question about paying players.

Serious question. Just thought of it. I'm sure there is a simple answer, but I can't think of it.

Clearly, we seem to be heading in the direction of schools, or conferences, paying players. The argument has been, "These kids aren't like regular students. They can't go out an earn money. They don't have any way to even get enough money to buy their girlfriend a pizza. We need to pay them."

That argument may have made some sense before the days of NIL. Now, these players can go out and earn money. Whether it is a car dealer giving them a lease on a car in return for signing autographs, or any other local business doing the same thing, or Dr. Pepper signing a kid to a 7 figure contract to appear in there Fansville commercials, the players can go out, and sell themselves to a business and mutually agree to a contract. (Not unlike the college freshman who goes to the local McDonalds and makes an agreement to work part time.)

So, since kids can now go out and earn money, why should the colleges pay them? Guys are making 6 and 7 figure salaries now. That is far more than the universities will pay them.

I don't see it as an either/or scenario.

While a few kids have the pull to command big NIL money, the overwhelming majority probably don't fare very well financially. I bet less than 1% of athletes make enough NIL to match the face value of their scholarship.

So, NIL is really just becoming a way to bolster a scholarship offer, a way for a school to differentiate itself from a rival. "Come here, we've got a $10,000/semester NIL oppy for you along with some pro-grade marketing support/brand consulting" kinda thing.

If the dern NCAA would allow one/done in football as they do in hoops, NIL would become entirely manageable. No need to pay big-name athletes to play college football. Let the NFL do it.

NCAA doesn’t determine one and done. The NFL makes the rule you have to be 3 years out of high school.

We have 19 sports and probably 400 players on the rosters of those teams and maybe 10-15 of those athletes make more several thousand dollars from NIL endorsements. If all 400 of those athletes received an equal stipend, they would be able to buy gas, Chick fil A, a double chili cheese at Mac's or other every day items and the "stars" might also sign NIL deals. Everyone wins and NIL and NIL would work as it is supposed to work.
