Quick Offensive Breakdown vs. FSU

Sep 22, 2014, 10:47 AM

First, let's just get the shotgun snap on the 1 out of the way. It's the one thing that can be picked out and dissected to death. I completely agree that we should have been under center. There really isn't an excuse for it, and it cost us, period. On the flipside... if it's a good snap, and DW scores, no one says anything. But let's just go ahead and agree that it hurt us, was a bad decision, and it ultimately cost us.

1. Outside of the decision to stay in the gun in short yardage, I thought Chad and the offensive staff had a great gameplan, and I thought he called a good game. The TE's were involved more than we have seen. I liked the change-up in the screen game. We were able to run the ball effectively, which I thought was very encouraging. The stats may not show it, but we ran better than I thought we would against FSU front. I thought he called a good game, but now I'll be a little critical...

2. Finishing drives inside the 20 continues to be a problem, and it's one Chad has to fix. We are pretty much unstoppable 20 - 20, but we sputter in the redzone. This problem has haunted Chad since he got here, and it's time he found something that we can go to that will produce. I hope the emergence of DW as a duel threat, and the emergence of our TE's will help some. Bottom line, it has to be addressed.

3. Chad also has to find something for short-yardage with this group. For the past three years, he's been able to run TB in short yardage, but he's gotta find something else. It doesn't necessarily have to be power-I, double tight... but we need something we can go to, b/c it's been a problem that shows it's head at the wrong times. I would like to see some speed option with DW in there.

4. We were able to confuse and hold the FSU LB's quite a bit with our motion. Part of what Chad does is that he wants to get the LBs out of the box. That's why we throw outside so much. He wants to get those guys thinking about getting to their drops so much that we can run it inside. I would like to see him challenge over the middle a little more, and I think he will with DW.

5. What else can you say about DW... wow. There's a misconception that those who trusted the coaches were anti-DW and pro Cole. That's not true, and you can't really fault Dabo and Chad for how they handled this, IMO. Hell, even Cole led us down the field on that first drive, although he missed the pass in the EZ. DW is a special player, and I was in complete awe at his poise. I knew he was a player, but he looked like a seasoned veteran. Forget the "duel threat" label... this kid can flat out throw the ball.

6. I did think DW was a little hesitant running the ball. He had a couple of nice gains, but I think that is were the speed of the college game caught up with him a little. He has great escapibility, but I would like to see him be more decisive in the run game.

7. I thought our receivers showed out, and were very impressive. They will continue to get better and make plays. We are going to be tough to deal with on the edges, and may be better than we were with Sammy and Nuk in another year or so.

7. Finally... I don't think there is anyway you can put this loss on gameplan, playcalling, or coaching. You can disagree with a call here and there, and really disagree about the shotgun snap... all of which is warranted. However, we were prepared, had an excellent gameplan, and I thought we really played well on both sides of the ball. There is no question Dabo has got to find a way to win these games, and Chad needs to fix redzone and short yardage... but we lost this game b/c of 3-4 mental mistakes and one fluke play where or best corner fell down.

not running the ball effectively. One thing I will say is that this is really the first game where Chad didnt abandon the run. He stuck with it and it helped keep the FSU defense honest at least. If he had done more of that in the past, we'd probably have two wins vs USuC, not a 5 game losing streak.

But the OLine still sucks at run blocking. Our RB's were fighting for their lives basically as soon as they hit the LOS, the OLine got no push and never left the LOS, they never got to the second level and thus we had no big runs.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

our OL absolutely has to get better.. but I don't think that

Sep 22, 2014, 11:02 AM

ypc is very indicative of how we ran the ball. We were effective, and I though CJ ran well. It's still FSU's front you're running against.

Agreed our OL can't effectively run block a top 10 DL. They will look good against the unc's of the world but struggle with physical front 7 like fsu uga. of course we have a 6 7 275lb lt and a 6 5 300 lb rt not exactly road graders by todays standards.

If we are going to continue to try to be more run oriented i would like to see Kalon Davis at RT and Crowder at RG that puts a lot more beef in there with Beasley and Guillermo!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That's not great, but consider the opponent

Sep 22, 2014, 11:21 AM [ in reply to The running game was complete garbage, 2.5 ypc is ]

Also, we lost 23 yards on the snap over Watson's head and we lost 4 yards on 1 sack (only 1 sack against FSU!). So, even subtracting the sack yardage (because that's on the OL, too), we had 124 yards rushing on 40 attempts, good for a pretty mediocre (but still not bad against FSU) average of 3.1 YPC.

I thought we outcoached a team with superior talent and

experience, but our players didn't make the plays that were there to be made.

Agree on DW running. If he could turn it up right after faking the handoff, there are more yards to be had sometimes.

I expect DW to make tremendous strides each game as he gains experience and we'll overcome some of the limitations we have on the line and at running back. We should be a pretty ### good team by year end.

Weren't we #1 in the country in red-zone offense just 2

Sep 22, 2014, 11:23 AM

years ago?

The red-zone offense failed in this game, but the plays were there to be made. Stoudt missed a wide-open Leggett for an easy TD, Norton snapped it over Watson's head by 20 yards, and we scored TDs on 2 other red-zone drives.

And I disagree about your "misconception". There were clearly Stoudt supporters that were saying things such as Watson was not ready, he didn't know the whole offense, he'd only played in one meaningful series against UGA, he would surely get injured against a physical team like FSU, etc. It was obvious to everyone that Watson needed more playing-time, but Dabo claimed the QB rotation would be the same as it was against UGA (12 drives for Stoudt before Watson got his 2nd drive).

Dabo ultimately made the right decision, but that doesn't mean he handled the SC State or UGA game correctly....and who knows about the week in practice. Watson may have missed out on a bunch of first-team reps this week that could have really helped out on some of those run plays that looked like the timing was way off.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Dabo did not say that the quarterback rotation would be the

No I'm nitpicking the Stoudt supporters...

Sep 22, 2014, 11:43 AM

I have no problem with how the coaches handled it...I would have pretended Stoudt was the starter in the media too. There was no reason for Watson to be exposed to extra media pressure.

You may not have been one of them, but there were clearly "Stoudt should stay the starter" supporters here last week and people saying Watson wasn't ready to be the guy against FSU.

As far as practice...no one here knows how the reps at practice went this week. Maybe it was an error, and maybe it wasn't.

York: My final question to you is simple: In early to mid 4th quarter it was evident to several of us that the only way FSU was going to "get" us was to hit a long pass. With a freshmen at corner who has done a great job on a senior all game, we all agreed that starting the fourth the free safety should have been told to help Alexander on the coverage of Green. Question? Do you agree or disagree with that and why either way?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I know you asked york, but I'd like to also say

Sep 22, 2014, 11:52 AM

If Mac had a great game up until that one play, why would you suddenly think he couldn't handle it? Getting conservative was a criticism against UGA last year. I think we needed more pressure on that play than giving Mac more help. Had he not fallen, it wouldn't have been a TD (even if it was completed)

Sep 22, 2014, 12:04 PM [ in reply to I know you asked york, but I'd like to also say ]

mac: The reason you consider it is that the one play that could get us was a long pass and the one player most likely to be the receiver was their best receiver Greene. By providing some assistance from the free safety your simply reducing the odds that he and that play will get us. Yes, it is conservative BUT remember it was early/mid 4th quarter. Another way to do it would be to put A 5TH DB on the field. Finally, we had ;pressure on the play but it just didn't get there in time.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

first of all... do you know what coverage we had called?

Sep 22, 2014, 11:52 AM [ in reply to Re: what are you doing? seems like you are nitpicking here ]

it depends on a lot of things... you can't just "have free safety" like in backyard ball all the time.

maybe we rolled the coverage, and that left MA one on one.... either way, it was a deep corner route, so safety help wouldn't have mattered...

MA had done such a good job, that I would have had a safety shadowing O'Leary before Greene.

Re: first of all... do you know what coverage we had called?

Sep 22, 2014, 12:10 PM [ in reply to first of all... do you know what coverage we had called? ]

I do not agree simply because the one player , Greene, was the individual who could beat us for the long one.BTW, I meant to say the safety on the side of the filed that Green was lined up on. The only intent here is to make them beat us on a drive and my judgment said that they weren't going to do it with the way our D Line and LB's were playing. A 5th DB could have done the same thing.
I'm sure you know that late in games where you are ahead is the time to look at a wide variety of strategies to be certain that the opponent has to "earn" his way.

I totally disagree with you--that's what makes the world go around--- but I do agree with the strong rush which we had all day. Don't forget, MA is a still a freshman and that was a tall order for ANY freshman.

Re: first of all... do you know what coverage we had called?

Sep 22, 2014, 12:20 PM [ in reply to first of all... do you know what coverage we had called? ]

To answer you directly I obviously do not know what coverage we called but I do know that whatever coverage would be called needed to be one where we could provide some help to MA. Why? simply because that is the one play that could get us.
Not unlike an ice hockey game I called once where the defending team went "to a spy strategy" on a great player and shut him all but down. When I asked the coach after the game why he did it: his reply was simple. We might lose but person X was not going to beat us. Maybe someone else could have beaten us but not him.
I agree that this is very conservative approach but then again we were well into the fourth quarter.
