I have come to the realization that we are stuck in the ACC

Jun 29, 2012, 9:26 AM

and probably will be for now. I hate it but I love Clemson and have and will always pull for the Tigers. It is, however, very distressful to see USuC and think about how they are going to lap us in money and prime-time exposure.

Be that as it may...now more than ever ACC Groupies I need to know what needs to be done to make our conference a better football conference. (I don't need to hear just win nor add more northern basketball teams nor everything will be just fine.) I need to know specific, soilid steps that will secure Clemson's football future. What would you do in 5 years time to make this conference more solid in football(and no ND is not coming).

I have my list (get rid of Bozo the Clown, go back to 8 game conference schedule, rework the TV contract and the amount of money each program receives, etc. etc.).

I want to hear your list. And if I keep hearing everything is fine from you guys then I know we are going down like the Titanic with the band playing.

I think this year we are going to have a fantastic team and win a lot of games--a lot of games--we will all be happy. Dabo is building a champion. In fact I think we have a chance to punk FSU in Tally but I worry about the long term and all of this conference expansion. No malice here but if we have to stay in this conference then what are the steps to making it a better football conference. Ideas are part of the currency of reality. Dream big and tell me what needs to happen. I know we are all on the same page in pulling for the Tigers!

GO TIGERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

FSU/GT/VT/Miami also winning

Jun 29, 2012, 10:06 AM

thats the biggest thing. If we have 4 teams winning on a national level that even a boob like Swofford can't screw it up.

If the 5 football schools continue to be fair to middling then not even Mike Slive could help.

Re: FSU/GT/VT/Miami also winning

Jun 29, 2012, 10:08 AM

Problem is, we (Clemson, FSU, Gt, VT, Miami) don't have much time to accomplish it. Once the conferences expand and go to 9 game conf scheds, they will not be scheduling OOC with teams like those listed above....there would be no need to. And as the number of playoff teams increases, it becomes less needful.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We need to get rid of the 9 game schedule too

Jun 29, 2012, 10:16 AM

especially if we are the only conference doing it. But for some reason it doesn't seem to be hurting the PAC-12.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

it doesn't hurt the PAC12 because all of their rivals are

Jun 29, 2012, 10:20 AM

within the conference outside of the two new members in Utah and Colorado. Our struggle with 9 conf games revolves around the fact that we have a non conf rival so we are locked into 10 games a yr.

Re: We need to get rid of the 9 game schedule too

Jun 29, 2012, 10:24 AM [ in reply to We need to get rid of the 9 game schedule too ]

Swoffie has no reason to get rid of it. For UNC and Duke it's more money. For us it's less.

Oregon 2011 OOC games, LSU, Missouri St., Nevada

Stanford 2011 ND, Duke, San Hose St.

USC 2011 Minnesota, Syracuse and ND

They're leaving off one big OOC game. in 2010 USC played UVA and ND....in 2010 Stanford played Wake Forest and ND...

Sure this doesn't hurt them. PAC12 gets higher SOS rankings than ACC. But other conf teams not scheduling ACC teams will hurt us big time....

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

only conference ?

Jun 29, 2012, 1:05 PM [ in reply to We need to get rid of the 9 game schedule too ]

Pac 12 , Big 12 and the ACC are playing 9 conference games. The SEC does not want to,read this conference whiners, because it will take away one of their cream puffs on the schedule that they use to pad their records. An extra conference game adds to the over all loss column.

Miami has never really poured (legal) resources into their football program. They have relied on just being in the high school football capital of the world as a continuous supply of talent.

Destroying the Orange Bowl hurt their "magic" though in that pipeline. Miami football is really about that cult of personality with the coach and team. They haven't found it in a while.

A lot of things have hurt Miami. That does not mean the damage is irreparable. They have continued to recruit well and I believe Golden is a solid coach. If he can win at Temple it is only a matter of time at Miami.

Jun 29, 2012, 10:15 AM [ in reply to Assume we do win. Then what makes our conference a top ]

And we have not done that well, at all.

Plus an incentive needs to go out to perform well. Distribute the ACC money according to productivity. You don't produce? Your slice is smaller. Simple!!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Winning the Bowl games against other Top Conferences

Jun 29, 2012, 10:32 AM

Yes, let the bowl teams keep 1/3-1/2 of the revenue from their bowl after expenses, the rest to be distributed evenly.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Of course it's true - who disputes that?

Jun 29, 2012, 12:12 PM [ in reply to I hate it when the ACC crowd says all we have to do is win. ]

All I have to do to become the fastest man in the world is beat Usain Bolt. That's all.

All I have to do to be the UFC heavyweight Champion is beat Junior dos Santos. Just knock him out - and I'm the champ.

Nobody argues that NOT winning will get us where we want to be, so I don't understand the whole "all we have to do is win" argument. It's really not an argument, it's just a statement of the obvious.

Re: I have come to the realization that we are stuck in the ACC

Jun 29, 2012, 9:59 AM

I think that's a great start, and a good way to look at our future. I would like to see a commitment from our AD and President to represent the "football schools" in the ACC. I agree with replacing Swofford, but if we can't do that, we at least, need our folks to insure that our needs will be heard.

Some thoughts from an old guy

Jun 29, 2012, 10:15 AM

You say you "love Clemson." So love Clemson for all of the great things there is to love about it. Success and worth / worthiness, at least in my definition, goes far deeper than W-L's at the end of a season. If you don't understand this concept stop reading. Never marry... for God's sake don't have kids, buy a car, go out to eat, or even get a dog. Life is destined to disappoint you. We don't live in a perfect world but it is close enough for folks who have learned to appreciate the good things we do have. Regardless of what was said to my Grandpa he used to reply, "Ah cain't he'p it." Consequently not worrying about things he could not help left a lot more time and energy to enjoy the things he could. Look at it this way, if you are all the other Brainiacs out there came up with exactly what Clemson MUST DO to achieve world domination wouldn't it be frustrating to be denied the opportunity to execute that perfect plan?

Re: Some thoughts from an old guy

Jun 29, 2012, 5:29 PM [ in reply to Some thoughts from an old guy ]

Well said Airport. I realized about 3 years ago that if I let everything go that I couldn't control, essentially not worry about it, then my happiness increased exponentially. Life is too short to fill it with worry and fear. Worry and fear are wasteful emotions.

If there is anything that we can't realistically work to produce a change in, then it is out of our control and there is no sense giving one second of worry to it. It is what it is. But if we can affect the outcome of something, then replace the worry with work to achieve the desired result. In either case, worry has no place.

Life is meant to be lived free of worry and fear - that is the way God intends it.

Change the football divisions to load up one with those

Jun 29, 2012, 10:18 AM

having success in football and another division with those teams currently struggling. Every two years swap the worst team in the top division with the best team in the lower division.

The more competitive football programs would play each other every year at least once, substantially boosting each's SOS, plus 3 games against the lower division. The upper division teams, as a competitive and financial reward for investing more in football and being better overall, would gain an extra league home game every other year from a lower division team, putting millions of dollars extra in income back into the programs where that's gone now with the 9-game schedule.

By shifting this 5th home conference game away from the less competitive programs, it also opens the door for the top programs to schedule home/aways with more quality OOC opponents than we can now, opening the door for even greater competition and even more legitimacy.

SOS concerns would be a thing of the past. The finances would shift in favor of football programs with the extra home game, and the league would benefit greatly as a whole with a much larger and more frequent slate of competitive games available for broadcast.

2024 purple level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think that would be counterproductive

Jun 29, 2012, 11:22 AM

It would make it much less likely for a team to get through the regular season with less than 2 losses.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It would indeed for most teams, but a championship-caliber

Jun 29, 2012, 12:56 PM

team is going to rise to the top and win them all, or maybe lose one. A one-loss team with that schedule, that wins the league championship, is guaranteed entry, period. Obviously an undefeated is in. It even bodes well for two-loss teams to be in the mix if it's like 2007, which happens once a decade. It actually sets the table for two league teams to make it in based on SOS if there's an undefeated plus a 1-losser (to the undefeated).

No doubt the regular season of the league would be light years ahead of where it's been the past twenty years for not just league football school fans, but football fans nationwide.

Here are my ideas to help ACC out (longish)

Jun 29, 2012, 10:42 AM

This is not the entire answer, but here's what I believe is needed to change the perception from espn.

1. The ACC needs 5 top 10 finishes over the next 2 seasons in football. (preferably 2 this year and 3 next year) This will require us to win our OOC games (and by win, I mean beat the teams in the big 4 conferences and destroy the OOC teams not in the big boy conferences)

2. Those dumb #### ACC commercials during the games need to be awesome ACC football commercials. We all know how good the ACC is academically, let's sell ACC football. And make the highlights on the commercial times when we placed hard hits on SEC teams (like FSU on Lattimore or us laying out some Auburn punk for example)

3. Definitely re-structure the divisions for football to North/South...that's what we are now and our football division should indicate that.

4. Get the big name teams on TV at prime times. We NEED Clemson night game at home against USUC or VaTech to show how "SEC like" the ACC can be. Same can also be said for FSU night games and VaTech night games. Just don't put your good teams on Friday night and embarrass the ACC please.

5. The good ACC teams need to destroy the bad ACC teams. I know this is rude, unsportsmanlike, and frowned upon, but we need a few teams (3 or 4) to look really really good and 50 point beatdowns on duke, wake, syracuse, etc will enhance the image of the conference as a whole.

6. Don't let the bad teams in ACC act like FCS teams. There is no reason Duke or Wake should schedule teams like Notre Dame, Alabama, or Stanford unless they are prepared to invest in their football enough to win or compete respectably. If they need money that bad, cut out a crappy sport nobody cares about (sorry, but true)

7. I think there is an outside chance that Notre Dame goes to a conference eventually for football. I think we need to make that happen. If they won't commit, then Pitt, Miami, BC, Duke, and all other ACC teams should tell them to go eff themselves. Sorry, but they aren't good enough to not have to play by the rules. I'd love to have them in our conference, but if they won't come, screw em. If (big if) we could get ND, the $$ gap shrinks.

Just my thoughts

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

ANy attempt to improve it is putting lipstick on a pig.

Jun 29, 2012, 11:10 AM

or polishing a turd.

UNtil the people of NC decide that football is the best sport and start watching and going to the games in droves, it's all worthless.

Jun 29, 2012, 6:02 PM [ in reply to Here are my ideas to help ACC out (longish) ]

and not be allowed to use ACC teams to fill their schedules if they're not joining.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We need to make a good enough impression on...

Jun 29, 2012, 12:53 PM

upcoming recruits to insure that we get to the top and stay there in the next two years.

I know it sounds desperate but that's the nature of being in the ACC if we don't make the playoffs in 2014. We don't have to win it all we just have to seed in the first couple years.

If the ACC doesn't seed a team in the tournament two or three years in a row you can stick a fork in any ACC team's recruiting.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpgringofhonor-clemsontiger1988-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

5 Things:

Jun 29, 2012, 1:36 PM

1) Time for Swofford to retire - And his replacement needs to be from outside the conference. We don't need another North Carolina guy as the face of the conference for now (or maybe ever)

2) Realign the Divisions - The current setup is horrible for developing rivalries. We needs the divisions to be geographically sensible, and yes that means that Clemson, FSU & Tech are all in the same division.

3) 8 game conference schedules - For the short-term at least, we should go with an 8-game conf schedule. This should not be seen as a long-term solution, but more as a test. It gives our schools a better chance for good OOC matchups. We might go to 9 in the future as necessity dictates. But we shouldn't do it immediately.

4) Recruiting - We need to compare our recruiting and qualification standards to what the SEC is doing. Guys, we're recruiting in their backyard. We compete with them for players. There needs to be a serious look at making sure we're not hamstringing ourselves by being too strict on football recruiting. All I'm saying is we need to take a look at this as a conference and make sure we're not going overboard in a non-competitive direction.

5) Conference game scheduling - I think it would help more if we tried to make some of the conference games in the same week year-after-year. It makes the schedule more stable, and I think the ACC couldn't play games with certain teams when they jumble every friggin game every year. The SEC puts certain games at certain times each year, and it seems to help spread things out better.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: 5 Things:

Jun 29, 2012, 1:46 PM

I noticed that UGA, FLA and usc now are scheduling cupcakes the week before playing their ACC rivals.

UGA plays GA Southern this year, KY last year, a Bye the year before playing GT.

USC plays Wofford, The Citadel, Troy, a Bye, a Bye and a Bye - this year and the past 5 years,

Convenient scheduling.

badge-donor-20yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

null

Exactly...

Jun 29, 2012, 2:28 PM

One thing our conference could do is try to solidify the scheduling so that we get some buffer games prior to or after playing an OOC game, especially an instate rival.

Everything is about football now. I think people around the ACC are now finally getting that through their thick skulls. Our conference needs to sit down with the AD's of each school and put together ideas and things that can help us compete IN FOOTBALL.
