Targeting is an absolutely awful rule

It's too subjective.
I get that they are trying to protect players, but come on.
Make it a 15-yard penalty with no disqualification unless it is absolutely egregious.

Then there should be a rule that intentional targeting with celebration afterwards, means getting kicked out for the season, and if there is ever a 2nd offense by same player, get kicked out of college FB period with criminal charges. It's those kind of guys that intentionally try to injure other players that are screwing up college FB for us all!!!!!!!!!

If it's not intentional and flagrant, there should absolutely not be ejections. It's a physical game Powder Puff.

Another gripe I have is that it is ruled on by individuals who have never played football at a high level and have no comprehension of how fast things can happen on a football field. A defender can be lined up for a textbook tackle and the runner ducks his head causing the helmet to helmet and the D gets thrown out.

like most rules it favors the O when interpreted. You hardly ever see it called on the O when they use their helmet. The D cant always hit the way they want but in calling it the presume they can. Basically hit the guy at the waist then you dont horse collar or target

The targeting rule is a good rule when applied the way that protects all players. Intentional helmet to helmet clashes is bad for the sport of college FB, and it must be stopped with any means necessary to stop it. No fan in the worlds wants to see their kid paralyzed for life bc an angary player tries to hurt another player!!!

they risk getting a targeting penalty. I guess you can try to be careful, and hope your helmet doesn't contact a ball carrier's helmet, but I don't know how a defensive player can be effective when playing with that level of caution and restraint. The word "Targeting" itself implies intent, yet we have gotten a million miles away from anything close to intent, and instead are severely punishing innocent players for incidental contact that occurs naturally in the course of a very violent, physically brutal sport.

tons of cases where there was no indication of intent (targeting), which is inherent in the original purpose and intent of the rule.

My thoughts too. It’s an extreme reaction to the “possibility “ of an injury. I get it, no one wants to see players injured, especially head/ neck injuries. The game has existed for a long, long time. You cannot prevent all injuries. Protecting players is possible without altering the game by ejecting a player for a foul that isn’t intentional. I think targeting is sometimes caused by the offensive player .

I support the rule overall, but sometimes it can be rough. In the end it is what is best for the players' healths.

Try to tackle Derrick Henry blasting off tackle and lowering his helmet on a 1st and goal with two yds to go. Try to arm tackle and push him back gently. Good luck on that!
