Targeting and the Playoffs

Feb 4, 2019, 9:03 PM

Sorry if this has been discussed before. Has there has ever been a targeting call in a National Championship game? I can't remember one. There should have been one in 2016 on the Alabama player who hit Mike Williams and knocked him out of the game for a bit. The one (2018) in which Trevor Lawrence got hit I have a lot of sympathy for the defender because Trevor lowered his head and it is difficult to tackle someone without targeting. Also, on that play Trevor was lucky that has speed had been significantly reduced by another Al. player or he might have gone out of game.

Now for the Notre Dame game. The call against Justyn Ross was absurd. Also, when it happened I told my wife the SEC officials were at it again. I must admit, accept for that call (which was reversed) they called a pretty reasonable game. I can't remember what half it occurred in, but Can you imagine the controversy with an SEC officiating crew taking one of our superstars out of the 1st half of the National Championship game--most likely against one of their own? I don't think they should use conference officials if a team from the conference is potentially playing in a future playoff game.

With 9 seconds to go in the 1st half of the Notre Dame game, there could have been two targeting calls on Notre Dame. One on the guy that hit Trevor late and one on the guy who hit Hunter.

Also, do any of you ever recall seeing a targeting call in any semifinal game in the Playoff era? I don't.

I agree about the officials affiliation with a participating

conference but the targeting call against Bama was while Trevor was on his feet after a throw. One of the dlinemen hit him high enough that the crown of the helmet caught TL's chin strap. Imo, it should have been called.

I can't throw a flag on a defender with his head down and meeting the ball carrier who also has his head down. The perfect way to knock the ball loose is the crown of the helmet. That's how it's taught and that's how it should stay. If a RB or any other ball carrier lowers his head he's trying to protect his guts and the ball.

I didn't like the defender swinging his arm against TL's helmet in the incident you discussed but it wasn't a vicious enough blow to the head to flag, imo.

I thought Muse got away with one on his 4th down stop

between that and him standing over Tua and staring at him after the play had me hoping a yellow flag wasn't coming in.

Purely a shoulder hit... The standing over was 'questionable'...***

Tua was a runner with his head down diving for the marker.

Muse didn't lead with the crown of the head and the hit was clean. As far as goading or standing over a player you might want to checkout Williams standing there with his arms folded after tackling Trevor. If it's good for the goose, it's good for the gander.
