Talked with an old friend today about Clemson baseball

His son had committed to Clemson verbally while Monte Lee was coach. When it came time to sign Monte tells him there is no scholarship for him. He had to scramble to find a place that had a scholarship for him because it was so late in the recruiting process. This young man was left out in the cold not by Clemson but by Monte.
He wound up playing for a smaller school and was getting a lot of attention from MLB scouts until he injured his shoulder his junior year. So, he had the talent to play at Clemson but got shafted by Monte.
Glad we have Eric Backich as our head coach now.

Glad we have Bakich too, for a lot of reasons, not the least of which is the culture he brought with him. Belanger has performed a miracle with this pitching staff. Grice said yesterday in his post-game interview that he's never played for a better group of coaches.

Those were good interviews with Caden and Coach Bakich. Both impressed.

There are relatively few scholarships in baseball and most of them are divided up between players. What I see is an entirely new and positive attitude and we can give our coaching staff all the credit for that.

I’m sure that really hurt, but college baseball struggles to have enough scholarships , and many have partial rides that are supplemented by academic or need based grants. The real studs go the minor league route at the last minute many times. It is sort of like an annual transfer portal/ draft for the teams and there are lots of moving parts.
If you look at the attendance of most schools, there isn’t enough gate to pay their way as a sport. So it is another sport that football ultimately pays for.
I’m not defending Lee, a good friends son had the same experience at another school, but it’s part of CBB. He walked in to find that he was one of 5 new catchers the coach had brought in, for 2 partial scholarships. So the kid had planned his whole future around a lying coach. He never played a college game after being highly recruited.
He survived and is a good adult.
It’s all about money, folks. Never believe otherwise…
