T-shirts: How old is too old?
May 4, 2021, 11:44 AM
|

I was at the IOP marina yesterday and some dude was wearing a T-shirt (a little tight, but mostly fit) that on the back said SIGMA PI EPSILON (or some such combination of greek letters) SPRING FORMAL 1990
I got to thinking about it; That shirt is 21 years old. It can buy liquor. I'm not sure how you keep a piece of clothing in rotation for 21 years, but just for appearances, is it time to retire a 21 year old fraternity shirt?

My mom bought me a shirt from the 1984 Clemson

Vs Coot game she found somewhere. Thought it would be cool to have a shirt from the rivalry game the year I was born. My sister was born in '84 (no pigs). I was '86. Thanks mom. I still routinely wear it but only around the house now. Plenty comfy. I wore it alot in college though along with my granddad's clemson jackets from the 70's or 80's.

I just found my almost 40 year old Killer Whales t-shirt

last week. Put it on, had a hard time getting it back off, put it back where I found it. I'd wear it proudly today, but it seems there's a little more warlord than there used to be.

shirt, and a SpiderMonkey shirt I'm not even sure where it came from.
On one of the last 3-4 moves, they both made it to goodwill.

That thing was hot.

Like, temp hot. I probably wore it twice. It was black, was a real think cotton, and had the full plastic iron on Stones tongue on the front and back. It was like wearing a plastic rain coat.
It went away probably during the great purge of 2015 before we moved to Clemson.

those were the days man. my mom was on a pro team (obviously not sharing) and I fished with the husbands and sons. toured the coast a good bit from 6th grade to 12th grade fishing tournaments.
guy I fished with won 2 nationals before "retiring"
but yes, lot of chains and stuff back in those days. what else do you expect from a bunch of rich rednecks?
pretty sure the dude I fished with was running drugs. Had trip 300s when they first came out, one of the first Yellowfins on tour too. Don't recall him working a lot.
but those Donzi girls.......

I was surprised they are still around

I checked their website
https://www.skafishing.com/
I didn't know that was still a thing. I remember those dudes coming to town and trying to put in at Shem Creek boat landing.
Its hard to back in a 35' Contender and put it in on low tide on a ramp that drops off 6' below the water.

No time limit EVER on a good shirt

BTW, that's 31 years old, not 21.
You keep a good t-shirt for extreme dirtywork purposes (mowing, fishing, painting) as long as it provides happiness, no matter how it looks to others, no ragrets. Great shirts come along rarely in life - those that fit exactly right, take a beating, yet have that almost siren-song draw to you to wear again. (Remember "Golden Boy" Seinfeld episode?)
I know I have a couple that have probably endured 1000+ washings. They easily date back to the 1990s. Been through fish guts, grease, paint, mud, whatever. Good times. You almost shed a tear when you have to trash them.

are and therefore capable of lasting longer.
I believe Obed® recently posted about the sad loss of one of his long-time tshirts.
I personally have an old squadron skivvy shirt that I got in late 98/ early 99. It’s a Hanes Beefy T and still in fairly good shape...fraying a bit around the collar but functional for around the house. I don’t expect I’ll ever throw it out, but one day it will just disintegrate in the washing machine.

Pre-NAFTA Hane's Beefy T's were the finest pieces of clothing ever woven, maybe, MAYBE second to pre-NAFTA Champion reverse weave sweatshirts.
