Strange question

May 29, 2019, 10:07 AM

This might be a weird question to ask, but are any of you guys Cricket fans? I've just recently learned the rules of the game and watched some short video clips of the bigger international games, and it looks really interesting. The Cricket World Cup is coming up in the next few days and I'm considering trying to catch some of it. How fun is it to watch for more than 15-30 minutes? And how hard is it to keep up with, considering the terminology used by the commentators?

You post about cricket and the response is crickets.

I love mine. I have 4. Best polo shirts I’ve ever owned, plus Luke Wilson and Willie Nelson approve of them. You can’t go wrong with Criquet Polos.

Rules? According to Australians the game is made for fans to get drunk while lounging in the grass/stands. At least that is what they told me when I was there for a month.

I think that the Cricket board is just a little farther that way ;) ->-->>--->>>---->>>>----->>>>>

I've played cricket with internation students (mainly

Indians) from Clemson and had a good time, but I still think baseball is a better game. In fact, I kidded the Indians that the modern rules of cricket were created to overcome the "boringness" and simplicity of the low-scoring game of "fubol." Cricket swings the pendulum all the way to the other end where it is overly complicated, but more interesting and exciting than soccer.

I wouldn't mind playing again, but, like I said, I believe baseball to be cleaner and better-designed game.

No, nobody is a cricket fan.***

Cricket is a great game. Obviously the best format is the longer form, which is played over 5 days for International games, and 4 days for those played at State/Province/County level.

There are 2 forms of (shorter) One Day cricket ...... Twenty-Twenty (often called T20), where each team gets 20 overs to score as many runs as they can, or the 50 over game (this is what the World Cup is) where each team gets 50 overs to score as many runs as they can.

To fully appreciate cricket takes time. It is a very complex game, with thousands of subtle tactical and strategic nuances. If you understand what is going on, then you will sit spellbound for days. If you don't understand it, then you'll get bored quickly.

That 3 and 4-hour football and baseball games are too long! You have to schedule a week's vacation simply to watch an insect match? ;)

While work had me travelling internationally year around, I was able to take in and or watch a lot of different professional sports globally. I always liked watching Cricket but i definitely didn't understand all the rules. Out all the different games, Rugby by far became my favorite international sport.

Side story: I went on an offshore fishong trip in Australia, just outside Sydney. Anyway, the day I booked I was just an add-in to a group already hired the boat. When i got on that morning I was joined by a group of younger physically fit studs. Come to find out, it was a birthday trip for one of the blokes and 3 of them were professional Rugby players and 2 were professional Cricket players. That being said, it quickly became a heck of a fun drinkfest as they brought two giant coolers full of beer and started pounding as boat left dock. Didn't stop until boat pulled back up to the dock. We caught a buzz and some fish. I guess two of those guys were very well known, one Rugby and one Cricket. The Rugby player had just signed two big contracts to play one season in Aussie and another season on a Professional US team out of LA. He played both seasons in the same year.

TigerBigBass ..... When you say Rugby, do you mean Rugby Union or Rugby League.

League is now a far better game. The ball is in hand a lot more, with players trying to create and run into space, in order to gain ground or score. It's fast, open, attacking, with plenty of big hits and tackles.

Since it went professional in the mid 90's, Union has tinkered with its rules, and is now a shadow of the game it used to be in the good old amateur days. Now, whether for fear of becoming isolated from their support, or because of lack of space due to modern effective defensive patterns, players just seem to deliberately run into contact and recycle possession endlessly for little gain.

I enjoy both games actually. I even like the Olympic version of 7 on 7.

I even watched a lot of the Aussie Rules Football rugby where they play on an oval field. It is very fast paced, lot more scoring, players are way more athletic overall but it's not near as brutal as Traditional Rugby.

League is definitely a better version. The guy I met in Aussie was a League player.

I was in South Africa a few October's ago when the SA Springboks were in the semifinals against the All Blacks in the World Cup. Holy moly Johannesburg was wide open during that game, everything shut down, it was fun.

The highest paid cricket player makes 28.7 million per year. Hard to believe how much they make.

M.S Dhoni is his name. He is from India.

Cricket is a religion in India, and with a population of over 1.3 billion, it's no wonder that huge revenue is created, of which the players get their share.

In fact, because of the financial clout held by the authorities who run cricket in India, there are many who fear that they hold too much power when it comes to deciding schedules, tournament venues, and rule changes. Basically what India says goes because of the huge TV deals they bring with them.
