Dealing with a loss
Sep 27, 2021, 7:58 AM
|
|
I've grasped the reality that we're likely looking at a 3 or more loss season for the first time in a several years. But I'm not going to stress over it or get mad. Don't get me wrong; there was plenty of baseball cap throwing in my garage on Saturday. I'm going to do that during any game when things go badly.
It's afterwards where I don't stress any more. My friends I've made post-2014 asked me Saturday night if I was going to be okay. They were a little surprised when I shrugged and said everything's fine.
I used to let a Clemson loss ruin my weekend and sometimes my week. I didn't want to watch football the rest of the weekend, NFL included. I was pretty much unapproachable the night Aaron Kelly dropped that deep ball against BC and we missed out on the ACC championship game. I was seeing red after Tommy benched Reggie and then Jad Dean shanky-mcshankersoned the potential tying field goal against the Cooters in 06.
But one simple game stopped all that for me. And that was the 2012 Orange Bowl.
I don't have to get into details with that game with y'all, but I will say that I spent a stupid amount of money in Miami to watch that train wreck, and my behavior was less than admirable.
When I was sitting in the airport nursing the mother of all hangovers and watching all the West Virginia fans smirk at me, I thought, "It can't get much worse than this."
You know what? I think I was right. It's hard to get mad anymore when you hit that bottom.
In the same way that loss changed Dabo's mentality toward the program, I started treating losses with the "life goes on" approach. Sure, I wasn't happy when Deshaun got hurt against GT in 2014 and Cole threw the two ugliest pick sixes in history. Or when we dropped two more to Coot teams that were less talented than us (they were only more talented than us in that 5-year stretch in 2010 and 2011). I shrugged off Pitt. Then Syracuse the next year. I didn't feel bad at all leaving the Superdome after LSU won. Disappointed, but not mad or sad.
Even after we lost to Bama in the first national title game, as my wife cried on the couch ("It's not fair," she said. "They have enough titles... we deserve one!"), I told her it would be fine. We'll be back. We have a lot to look forward to.
If Clemson losses still ruin your weekend or even the next week, I hope you'll take it from me--someone who used to be there--to shrug it off and accept what this season is going to be. It won't be the last season like this that we have under Dabo, probably. We can't make the playoffs every year. Yeah, it's a letdown because of the high expectations, but don't let a football loss ruin your time with family and friends, or take away from all the other great things life has to offer until the next Saturday.
It will be fine. We'll be back. We have a lot to look forward to.
P.S. Dabo, do something about Tony. Now.

Back in the day if we lost I'd have a massive headache before I got to the car and didn't want anyone around me.
After the WVU game we went to The Keys with friends and I thought this is a much better way. We lost, but it's over and life goes on.
Now don't get me wrong here I hate ####ing losing!! But I don't let it make me ill or ruin the next week. It happens and as Dabo says 'next man up'
It's next game up. #BeatBC

WVU was misery.

Miserable game, the only time in my 41 years of Clemson game that our entire tailgating crew looked at each other and ceremoniously all stood up in left before halftime.
If we can come back from that, we can survive anything!

Can’t reside there.
Same can be said for the older retired population I encounter quite frequently. Stop all the moaning and complaining about dang near everything _ especially the service and prices at restaurants and bars. Five more minutes to wait for a drink ain’t going ruin your day when you got no place to go.

Bout the same.

The change in mentality is twofold, for me.
1) Covid: I found myself simply not following or caring about CFB last year like I normally do; bored of reading the threads about practice and player development and all of the nuances that happen every day. Such a meh football season. This year, was getting back into it, but not at levels of the past pre-Covid decade. So it doesn't hurt as much as if this dive had happened in 2019.
2) We've been to the top. I've attended two national championship games that we won in the past 5 years. The first one was on my birthday. It's incredible, and I got to experience it. If we never get there again, I'll still have those days. West Virginia and South Carolina fans can smirk all they like. I hope we get back there, but even if we don't, I got to see and feel and taste and experience something they'll never, EVER know.

It occurs to me that the last two seasons, i've found myself not really paying as much attention in the days and weeks leading up to the season opener. I hadn't really associated it with COVID, and maybe it's unrelated, but yeah...the days of poring over articles and schedules etc, seem to be over for me.

I was EXACTLY the same way after a loss. I think for me, the change occurred when my kids were old enough to do more than just cry and eat. It dawned on me that in the grand scheme of things, a loss wasn't really that big of a deal, and it wasn't worth letting a bunch of 18-22 year olds (who undoubtedly tried their best to win) ruin the next few days for me.
Not to threadjack you, but as I told a buddy of mine after the GT game last week, we've gotten spoiled over the last 5-7 years or so. Games like GT and NC ST were just regular weekends for us for so long, and they swung both ways. Many people just simply don't remember the last time it was a regular thing. Personally, I think that may end up being somewhat helpful in the long run. The average fan will have a more vested interest in attending, and staying for, the games.

admit, as a fan, Dabo literally calling Tony Elliott "brilliant" right now burns 1000 suns hotter than Tommy dropping a "50% of all the teams lost today" on us.
The upside of this season for us mature fans is that it's a fantastic (and obvious) opportunity to prune some dead wood from the program. Then Dabo doubles down on the stubborn. It's like your college buddy in a toxic relationship that everyone knows he needs to end. Then one night he comes sobbing that he walked in on his girlfriend getting Chinese finger-trapped by the rugby team and you think "finally, this is what he needed", and then he's taking her flowers the next day.

We won't see change at OC for 2 yrs. Get used to it
He'll use our past successes to show how good he is. But truth is, our offense has digressed every yr since Scott left. Dabo will be blind to it til he can't deny it any longer

Being really choosy. I bet he’s turned down 15 or 20 offers. I bet USF offered him first too but he turned them down because he’s so choosy and they had to settle for Scott.

When my daughter was REAL young, I was slinging my hat

at the TV and screaming at the Tigers while playing Maryland when my wife said something along the lines of "What the fu>ck is wrong with you, dumbas>s? Those kids are just 19 and they don't give a sh>it about what you think. And if you wake our daughter, I'll beat your as>s." She was right, and I learned to calm down and not let it ruin my weekend.
My kids only know big wins though, losing is really tough for them. I let it roll off me.

it's tough to get worked up when the coaching staff looks to have thrown in the towel
and yeah, people are piling on. i've gotten more god #### texts this past month than the entire year. folks coming out of the wood work it seems.
i was more bent out of shape on the UGA loss, b/c I thought we'd be good.
i knew we sucked ### going into NC State, so the loss was more of an expectation.
i'm w/ you though. the bottom for me was when Jameis and co hung 53 or so on us in DV. i wasn't at the WVU game, and pretty sure I was really ###### up at a concert and saw the score on my phone and noped the #### away from that haha
i will say it seems like kids changes things. no idea how my dad was the way he was for so long while having me and my sister. maybe he's just a crazy SC redneck idk haha...he seems to have mellowed out a bit too though
