Spending the athletic dollar

Aug 29, 2022, 11:27 AM

I was reading somewhere that last year baseball operated just in the black. Like $7500 is what I read. I don't know if this is true or not. Obviously this would put the program well in the red now if true. So a few questions. 1.Is it ever reasonable to voluntarily lose money on a program? 2. As a sport that potentially earns much more is Basketball being ignored foolishly?

The ceiling is much higher in football…

and it’s not even close. Could we make more in basketball by investing more? Probably. But the investment in basketball would come at the expense of football, unless you cut funding for other sports, and football pays the bills.

nearly all non-football sports. Basketball may actually make money.

Men’s basketball makes about $1,000,000 in profit…

Women’s basketball loses several million. I’m pretty sure baseball loses a lot, but I’d have to look it up again.

When I worked at Clemson, I was always told that Football made tons of money, men's basketball broke even, and that every other sport lost significant amounts of money.
