Speaking Of Offensive Tendencies and running on 1st down

Nov 8, 2020, 7:07 PM

If I looked at it right we ran the ball 22 times on 1st down last night. Is that a problem for a team that can't run the ball? We lost yards on nine of them. We had 42 yds total and that included a run a ten and 13 yds. Do the math on the rest. Seems like that needs to be addressed especially when you have #16 at the helm.

It felt like it was even more than that-
Over and over again to finally break to 10-15yd run

I understand setting things up, but not consistently putting your offense in a 2 & 9

We run religiously on first down , even w the box loaded. Idk why we continue to bang our head on that rock. Break tendency for gosh sakes. I thought we took what they gave us.....my @$$

By the way. In addition to the 9 plays with losses there were another 5 plays that were less than 2 yds. Throw in how well we threw on first down and it is perplexing.

It is absolutely clear that our offensive line is well below average in run blocking and apparent that we could not run the ball versus ND. Given that I have no idea why we didn't throw the ball from our own 48 with just over two minutes to go. One or two first downs and game over. If we can see that I don't understand why the coaches can't. Is it because conventional wisdom says run the ball and run the clock. ND had 3 timeouts left.

Play calling at the end of regulation...

indicated that the coaches had no confidence in the offense’s ability to get a first down. I would guess that was because our OL had become a sieve and the the likelihood of a catastrophic sack or turnover made punting and putting the game in the hands of our gassed, injury-depleted defense the best alternative.

We did the same thing at NC State in 2017. Coaches obviously didn’t trust Kelly to get a few yards. NC State immediately drove it down the field on our gassed defense, and we were lucky to get a pick on a pass in the endzone.

All things considered, gambling on the defense in 2017 was probably the best choice. Not giving DJ a chance to sling it for the win last night... gutless. Just gutless. That along with the horrible clock management, and it adds up to the worst-coached game by Dabo & staff in a long time.

All that and the injuries, and we still managed to get it to double OT before the wheels totally fell off. Amazing. Weird. Only in 2020.

We're so predictable, nobody needs to steal our signs.

I wonder if the loss of Jeff Scott hurts? Just a thought. Again, I love our coaches. They recruit beautifully, develop and love the players, and for the most part, call great games. I agree with you guys. Too vanilla lately. Too many injuries to the wide outs hurts. Too many injuries on defense hurts. And the Oline.....dang, I'm sick and tired of talking about those guys. I'm all tuckered out. Good night.
